Clayton shadowed me during my shopping trips, always lurking just out of sight.
Even when he purchased a villa for me, he trailed us to the real estate office, remaining hidden but ever-present.
He was like a rodent skulking in the drains, observing a happiness that should have been his but that he had destroyed through his own actions.
"Clayton, there's no need to discuss this anymore. It's ancient history, and I've moved on. I'm getting married soon."
Clayton attempted to speak, but the words caught in his throat, his mouth quivering as he held them back.
"Alright."
With that brief response, he deflated as if burdened and walked away.
The once-confident and proud Clayton I had known had disappeared without a trace.
At my wedding to Matias, an acquaintance handed me a message from Clayton.
It said, [Irene, I've lost the right to say I love you. I have nothing left. Even if you had stayed with me, you wouldn't have found joy. I only hope Matias treats you well.
