The Ironwood gym was still buzzing with energy long after the final buzzer had sounded. The crowd was slowly filtering out, students chattering excitedly, parents embracing their exhausted sons, and the faint smell of sweat and victory still hanging heavy in the air.
Jaden sat on the bench near the end of the court, his jersey clinging to his skin, his head tilted back as he stared up at the ceiling lights. His body ached, every muscle screaming in protest, but he felt light like he was floating.
"You look half dead, Silk," Tank's deep voice rumbled as he dropped onto the bench beside Jaden, a towel draped around his neck.
Jaden let out a tired chuckle. "Feel half dead too."
Tank grinned, flashing his pearly whites. "But alive enough to smile, huh? We did it, man. Season opener, one in the books."
Across the court, Tyler Crane leaned against the padded wall, his face unreadable as he scrolled through his phone. Ethan stood near him, arms crossed, quietly speaking to Coach Hale.
A familiar voice cut through the noise.
"Hunter!"
Jaden looked up just as Ava Martinez walked briskly toward him, her camera hanging around her neck, notebook tucked under her arm. Her ponytail bounced with every step, and her sharp hazel eyes were locked onto him.
"Congrats on the win, superstar."
Jaden smirked faintly, sitting up straight. "You watched the whole thing?"
"Of course I did. Wouldn't miss it." Ava stopped in front of him, her gaze steady. "That last shot? Cold. Absolutely cold."
Jaden shrugged, though he couldn't hide the smile creeping onto his face. "Just doing my job, Martinez."
Ava smirked. "Well, your 'job' might just earn you a spotlight feature in the school paper."
Before Jaden could respond, Coach Hale's sharp whistle rang out, cutting through the post-game chaos.
"Alright, Hawks! Locker room, now! Let's wrap this up."
The locker room was quieter than usual, the exhaustion from the game settling into everyone's bones. Players sat on benches, unlacing sneakers, wiping sweat from their faces, and exchanging tired but satisfied nods.
Coach Hale stood in the center of the room, arms crossed, his expression unreadable as always.
"Good win tonight," Hale said, his voice steady. "But don't let it get to your heads. One game doesn't make a season. Every team we face from here on out will be gunning for us. Every mistake will cost us twice as much."
He scanned the room, his piercing blue eyes locking onto each player briefly before continuing.
"Hunter."
Jaden straightened up slightly.
"You showed flashes of what you're capable of tonight. Keep your head in the game, stay focused, and keep leading from the floor."
"Yes, Coach," Jaden said firmly.
"Crane."
Tyler looked up from his locker, his phone finally set aside.
"Good shooting tonight. But remember you're not just a scorer. You're a piece of this team. Play like it."
"Yes, Coach," Tyler replied, his voice quieter than Jaden's but steady.
Hale's eyes shifted to Ethan. "Cross, keep the team steady. You're the glue holding this together. Don't let cracks form."
Ethan nodded once, his face calm and focused.
Coach Hale let the silence linger for a moment before speaking again. "Get some rest. Monday's practice is going to make tonight feel like a warm-up. Dismissed."
As Hale walked out of the locker room, conversations slowly picked up again.
Jaden leaned against his locker, slowly peeling off his jersey when Tyler walked over. They locked eyes, and for a moment, neither said anything.
Finally, Tyler spoke, his voice low but clear.
"Nice game, Hunter."
Jaden paused, his fingers still gripping his jersey. "You too, Crane."
Tyler gave a small nod before walking away, joining Leo and Tank near the showers.
Ethan appeared beside Jaden, arms crossed over his chest.
"Well, that was… civil," Ethan said with a raised eyebrow.
Jaden smirked faintly. "Progress, I guess."
"Keep building on it, Silk. We're gonna need everyone on the same page if we want to go far this season."
Jaden nodded, his face serious again. "I hear you."
The night air was cool as Jaden stepped out of the gym, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder. The campus was mostly empty now, with just a few students lingering near the parking lot.
From the corner of his eye, he spotted Ava, sitting on one of the outdoor benches with her camera in her lap.
"You stalking me again, Martinez?" Jaden called out as he walked over.
Ava smirked, looking up at him. "Nah, just enjoying the peace and quiet. Thought you'd be celebrating with the team."
Jaden dropped his bag near the bench and sat down beside her. "Needed a minute to breathe."
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the faint hum of distant cars filling the air.
"You know," Ava said softly, "you really put on a show tonight. But it wasn't just the flashy moves or the final shot. It was how you held the team together out there. You've got something, Hunter."
Jaden looked at her, his sharp eyes softening slightly. "Thanks, Martinez. That… means a lot."
Ava glanced at him, her hazel eyes glinting faintly in the dim light. "Don't let it get to your head, though. I'm still watching you."
Jaden chuckled. "Wouldn't expect anything less."
Ava stood, her camera bag slung over her shoulder. "See you Monday, superstar."
As she walked away, Jaden leaned back on the bench, staring up at the night sky. His chest felt lighter, his mind clearer.
The season had begun. The road ahead was long, but for now, he let himself savor the win.
Above him, the stars glittered faintly against the deep black canvas of the sky.
Jaden closed his eyes, his hand resting lightly on his duffel bag.
For tonight, that was enough.
