Somehow, after getting everyone off me and waiting for the guy who had jumped out of the window, Yasuna took charge, introducing everyone to me from the oldest to the youngest.
"This is Osamu Kojiro, 3rd Year, and the club president. He's been there through both the good and the bad for us," Yasuna said, gesturing to the one in charge.
Next, she pointed at the guy who was almost always half-asleep, even when he was tangled up in some of the messes. "This is Kenji Hanzo, but you can call him Ken. He's the guy who jumped out of the window in front of you—he sleeps through everything, even chaos," Yasuna added with a grin, as Ken, half-awake, yawned and waved lazily at me.
"And now, for the remaining two girls—" Before Yasuna could finish, two girls rushed forward with energy that could practically light up a room. They were practically vibrating with excitement.
"I'm Yuki Sato!"
"And I'm Yukari Kato! We're both 2nd years, just like you! We're so happy you joined the club!" They were bouncing with so much energy that I thought they might burst. It felt like they'd just discovered sugar for the first time.
Then Yasuna stepped forward, pushing the two girls aside with a playful smile and confidence radiating from her every word. "I'm Yasuna Ohana, Vice President of the Report Club! Reporting for duty. We're thrilled to have you with us. May you achieve great things!"
I felt like I was melting under her presence. It didn't even make sense. She was so composed, yet the way she laughed with the others after such a cute act of dominance made her look unbelievably adorable. Watching them all laughing so freely made it impossible for me to stay serious. A small giggle escaped my lips at first, but before I knew it, I was laughing along with them, caught up in their joy. Even Ken, seemingly asleep, would randomly wake up, laugh his head off, and then fall right back to sleep. I envied that ability.
But a question still lingered in my mind: What did they mean by "saved the club"? I had to ask.
The mood in the room shifted when I did, everyone's faces turning serious. Osamu, the president, spoke with a calm voice. "Well, the thing is, if we didn't get a new member by the end of today, we would've been disbanded. A club needs at least six members to be registered. We got by last year with five, but without you, we wouldn't have made it."
He walked across the room, looking over their collective research as he continued, "And you—you just saved us. You've given us another year to create memories and finish what we started."
The weight of his words hung in the air, and the room felt a lot quieter, more somber. It was as if, in that moment, the weight of the club's future rested entirely on my shoulders.
Out of nowhere, I was suddenly yanked aside from the group, my eyes widening as I was pulled away by Saki. The entire club stared in disbelief, unsure whether to laugh or be concerned. Saki had a very important question, and it had to be answered immediately.
"Should I get eggs for dinner tonight? They're on sale, buy one get one free. Or should I get chicken and make Karaage?!" she asked without a second thought.
I stood there, stunned by the randomness of it all. "Are you serious right now?" I asked, loud enough for everyone to hear. The whole club was watching, unsure if Saki was messing with me. Yuki started moving toward the door, as if to defend Saki, but I quickly spoke up.
"Buy both," I said with a grin. "That way, we all win! We'll eat together at my house tonight. I'm too lazy to cook, and your cooking is always better anyway. And I know exactly what you'll make: Oyakudon with extra spicy sauce!"
Saki's face lit up, and she jumped in excitement. "Yes! But you better help me make it! It'll take forever!"
I nodded, waving her goodbye. Yuki paused mid-step, and the whole club looked at us, hungry at the mere thought of dinner. Yukari, clearly curious, asked, "You just go to her house like it's a daily routine?"
I chuckled, shrugging. "My mom and her mom were best friends before we were born. We came out at the same time, so it's pretty much expected that we're close. We've been through everything together."
The club seemed shocked by this revelation, and even Ken, who had been asleep, woke up blinking in confusion. Yuki, still processing, asked, "So, are you two a couple?"
I quickly shook my head, laughing. "No, we're not. We get that a lot, but we're just really close friends."
As the evening drew near, it was time to head home. We closed up shop and left. The day was winding down, and the cool air greeted us as we made our way out.
As I was leaving the school, I spotted Saki waiting near the entrance, her usual mischievous grin plastered across her face. I jogged over to her and asked, "Are you coming with me, or are you waiting for someone?" She nodded with a sparkle in her eye and said, "I'm waiting for Yasuna."
That took me by surprise, so I couldn't help but tease her. "Are you planning something sneaky?" I asked with a playful smirk. She just shrugged and started whistling, her carefree attitude making me laugh despite myself. Rolling my eyes, I shook my head and started heading home. But before long, Saki spotted Yasuna and rushed over to her, launching into conversation with her usual enthusiasm.
"Hey, Yasuna! What do you think about joining me for dinner tonight? You wouldn't turn me down, would you?" Saki said with a grin
Yasuna, being her sweet and gentle self, smiled warmly and agreed to join her. Before they left, Yasuna called her mom to let her know she'd be staying at Saki's for the night and would be back in time for school in the morning. Her mom and dad were out for dinner, so Yasuna had no problem getting the green light. The relief was evident on Yasuna's face, and Saki, as usual, was triumphant.
With everything set, the two of them quickly gathered all the ingredients for the Oyakudon. The excitement in the air was palpable as they rushed off to Saki's house. When they arrived, Saki proudly introduced Yasuna to her family, announcing she would be staying the night. Then, with a playful gleam in her eyes, Saki whispered to Yasuna, "Want to see a surprise? Come upstairs with me. I know you'll love it."
Inaru practically dragged me up the stairs, moving so fast I could hardly keep up. She didn't even give me a chance to settle the eggs on the table. They almost slipped from my hands if her mother hadn't caught them in time. Her mother scolded her gently, saying I was the guest and that she should be more careful with me. Smiling warmly, she told me she was happy to see Inaru making new friends. I simply nodded, my face flushed with a cold sweat as Inaru continued to pull me along. She was on a mission, and I was just along for the ride.
Finally, she opened the door to her massive bedroom. It was a dream world, filled with plushies, anime figures, and even stacks of video games. I was utterly astonished, unable to stop looking around at the overload of things to take in. But Inaru wasn't done yet. "The surprise is still coming," she said with a sly grin, before asking, "How much do you like him? And how are you planning to treat him? Because if I see him looking miserable because of you, I swear I'll handle it." She paused, then added, "I do have one request, but that can wait… Anyway, time for your surprise!" Her enthusiasm was infectious, and I was curious about what was coming next.
Inaru opened the balcony window with a dramatic flair, calling out, "Hey, Shikaru, come out here! You've got a visitor from school!" A voice from inside replied, "I'll be there in a sec—just about to beat this boss, almost done!" I recognized that voice instantly—Mr. Toko! My heart skipped a beat as I processed what was happening. Inaru was serious. She was about to go through the closed window, something I had only seen Ken do with open ones.
"3… 2… 1… lift-off!" Inaru declared, ready to jump. I thought she was joking until she actually started climbing out the window. But just as she was about to break the window—and possibly her skull—Mr. Toko shouted, "Hell no, you're NOT coming through the window again! If you want to come in, use the door. That's what it's there for!" Then, as his voice softened, he added, "Wait… is that Miss Ohana?"
I froze, unable to say a word, but I managed to wave at him weakly, a small smile creeping across my face. I was too stunned to process what was happening. Inaru, realizing that her plan was foiled, glanced back at me with a knowing look. She told me with a smirk, "I am not getting out of this without a broken bone or two." All I could do was agree, lost in my thoughts as I stared into the distance. Even though I only saw him for a second, it was enough to make my day. Ever since Mr. Toko transferred to our school, I had been captivated by his innocent face. It was love at first sight, and I wasn't about to let anyone else get close to him.
Without thinking, I guided him purposefully through the hallways, knowing he'd probably get lost. Maybe I had gone a bit too far by holding his hand, but it felt like something I had to do—no matter what.
He closed is window with the upmost haste and spoke loudly "You are not getting away from this Saki!"
Saki then went downstairs, telling Yasuna to stay in her bedroom and she could do whatever she wanted while she and her mom made dinner. She just responded with a simple nod and sat on the bed.Saki closed the door leaving her alone to do whatever she wanted.Looking around the room for a bit she saw some sticky notes and got closer to see what was written. One of them had, "4 May - Remember you have put your clothes at my house, come and get them idiot."Another one said, "8 September - Dude come get your breakfast when you wake up, it's on the second counter."All of them had been written so long ago, some also ripped due to the extended time they were stuck.Yasuna didn't have anything else to do, so she sat on the bed and started using her smartphone. It had been an hour since Saki left and Yasuna got bored of sitting so she thought of leaving the room. She went downstairs just to see them still cooking, Saki saw her and said,"Oh Yasuna, you're just on time, dinner is almost ready. Sorry for the wait.""It would have been done quicker if SOMEONE helped out, yea Shikaru I'm looking at you!""You said you'd help but just showed up now! Oh and Yasuna, you can sit right there beside him."Yasuna had a cold shiver for some reason, and the only thing she could think of was Saki's cold expression.Without much thought but something deeper inside her, she walked and sat beside Shikaru. He thought to himself, "So that was the reason she was waiting for Miss Ohana! That maniac!"He worked up the courage to ask, "So what are your parents saying about this, who's picking you up?"She just sat there stone-faced but she couldn't ignore the love of her life sitting next to her."Well no one is picking me up, I'm going to sleep here tonight.""I'll have to borrow Miss Inaru's clothes," she added with a gentle voice.Shikaru let out a soft laugh. Saki knew what was coming next but couldn't stop it.She was making the final part of the dish and if she left, the food would be ruined."So Yasuna, are you sure Saki's clothes will even fit you?""Say Saki, I've noticed you've gained a little weight lately.""You need to start working out, I can hire you a personal trainer if you want."He wore a smug grin as Saki glared daggers at him but stayed in place. Before Yasuna could stop it, she added, "True that Shikaru, we do need to hire one.""I think I can help with the budget," she said innocently. Her mom and dad both joined in too, saying, "Nice idea, you should learn more from him."Saki cried out, "Mom! Dad! Not you too! We have a guest at home, not now!"Shikaru leaned back in his chair with victory in his eyes, plan executed.Saki, silent in rage, tossed five extra chillies into Shikaru's plate with a wicked grin.
