Exposure

Raine stood frozen in place, his heart hammering in his chest. Elara's presence was suffocating, the air around them thick with tension. She had seen through his carefully crafted facade, and now the truth was out. There was no denying it anymore—Elara had discovered his secret.

Her eyes gleamed with a sharp intelligence, her smirk widening as she took a step closer. "I must admit, I didn't expect you to be this bold, Raine Evernight Valthorn," she said, her voice smooth and calculating. "Hiding a 5-star beast, and perhaps even more... It seems you're full of surprises."

Raine's mind raced. He couldn't afford to show weakness, but the situation was precarious. The bond with the beast wasn't fully established yet, and he couldn't risk it becoming unstable because of Elara's interference. Every instinct screamed at him to act, but he knew better than to make a rash move.

"What do you want, Elara?" Raine asked, his voice steady despite the storm brewing inside him. "Why are you here?"

Elara chuckled, her laughter cold and unfeeling. "You're clever, Raine. You've managed to keep a low profile for a while now. But the academy isn't as simple as you think. You may be good at taming beasts, but even you can't hide a legendary creature forever."

Raine's eyes narrowed. She wasn't just here to confront him about the 5-star beast. She had something else in mind. The question was: what?

"I'm not here to expose you," Elara continued, her tone shifting slightly, as if savoring the moment. "Not yet, at least. I'm here to offer you a deal."

Raine remained silent, waiting for her to elaborate. A deal? What could she possibly offer him?

"I'm aware of your ambitions, Raine," she said, her gaze piercing him like a dagger. "You want to be the greatest Beast Tamer to ever live, to restore Beast Taming magic to its former glory. But you'll never achieve that alone, especially with the way the academy views you and your magic."

Raine clenched his fists. He had always known that Beast Taming was a dying art, but he wasn't about to give up on it. Not when he had come this far.

"I'm offering you a partnership," Elara continued, her voice silky and persuasive. "Together, we can accomplish things neither of us could do alone. We can control the fate of the academy, and perhaps even the kingdom itself. You and I both know that there's more to this world than what the academy teaches. I can help you unlock the true potential of that beast you're hiding, Raine. All I ask in return is your loyalty."

Raine's mind churned. A partnership? With Elara? It was a tempting offer—far more than just the academic struggles he faced. If he joined forces with her, he could gain the power and influence to make Beast Taming great again. He could gain the resources to tame creatures no one else could. But at what cost?

"I don't need your help," Raine said, his voice cold. "I've already come this far on my own. I don't need a partner."

Elara's smile faltered, but only for a moment. Her eyes glittered with amusement, as though she had anticipated this answer. "You misunderstand, Raine," she said softly, taking another step forward. "You don't have a choice. You either accept my offer, or I'll expose everything about you to the academy. You'll be branded a traitor, a liar. And your precious beast? It'll be taken from you. All of it."

Raine's pulse quickened. She had him cornered. He could feel the weight of her words bearing down on him, the threat hanging in the air like a guillotine. If Elara followed through on her threats, his life would be ruined. The academy would turn on him, and his dreams of resurrecting Beast Taming magic would crumble.

But there was another part of Raine's mind—one that refused to submit. Elara was dangerous, but so was he.

He met her gaze with a chilling calmness. "You're underestimating me, Elara."

Her smirk faltered for just a second, but it was enough. Raine could see the flicker of doubt in her eyes.

"You think you can control me?" Raine continued, his voice low and dangerous. "I don't play by your rules. And I don't take threats lightly."

He stepped back, eyes never leaving hers, and reached out to the bond he had formed with the 5-star beast. The creature responded, its immense power radiating through the room. Raine's magic surged in response, and the chamber seemed to tremble with the force of their combined energy. Elara's eyes widened in realization.

"You think you can intimidate me with that?" she scoffed, her composure cracking. "You've barely begun to understand the power you're dealing with."

Raine didn't flinch. "Maybe," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I don't need to understand everything to make you regret underestimating me."

In that moment, something shifted in the room. The air grew heavier, and the magical energy felt tangible, vibrating with tension. Raine knew Elara wasn't the type to back down easily, but he also knew that she had just made a grave mistake by showing her hand too early.

"Leave," Raine said, his voice cold and unyielding. "I'm not interested in your offer. And if you threaten me again, you won't be the one who has the upper hand."

For a long, tense moment, Elara stood still, her eyes locked with his. The silence between them was deafening. Then, with a sharp, frustrated inhale, she turned on her heel, her cloak swirling behind her as she made her way out of the chamber.

But as the door clicked shut, Raine felt a gnawing unease settle deep within him. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

Raine turned his attention back to the 5-star beast, but the connection between them had shifted. The creature, sensing the tension in the air, had grown restless. Its eyes glowed brighter, and Raine could feel its raw power vibrating in the air.

He knew what he had to do now. He couldn't let Elara's threat stand. He had to make sure that the creature was fully bound to him—before anyone else could take it from him.

The next step in his journey had just begun.
