Traitor

Chapter 60

I left Betty in Sara and Mira's care. They would surely take care of her while I took care of some personal stuff. It was Sunday and although I had experienced a plethora of things in that one week, it was time to meet my lawyer and take care of stuff that mattered in my life as well.

Besides, there was another detail that I found a little... how should I say it... odd? Was that the word I was looking for? I didn't know. Perhaps, yes.

After all, I only reached this point after questioning anything and everything. If I had never done that, people would have eaten me up and nothing would have left of me to even spit out. After all, if the world was difficult for a woman to live in, then it was impossible for a child to live in. Especially in a man's world.

"So you say he left LA to meet me two days ago?" I asked my official lawyer, the one who was Lucy's uncle, the girl who was somewhat Sara's friend.

"Yes. Haven't you met him yet?" Richard asked me. Richard was a nice guy. His firm had worked for me for years now, and the extension was handed down from my grandmother. Of course, he wasn't aware of the dark side of his firm which dealt with drug lords or some other criminals of the LA. But he was aware that officially, I had two layers, him and another one. What he didn't know was that the other lawyer took care of my shady businesses.

So, as far as Richard was concerned, Matthew, my other lawyer, was coming to Pittsburgh to brief me on the week's proceedings and how to deal with the next week of my business which was technically true. Just that Matthews wasn't coming to only brief me over my official businesses but my side hustles as well.

But, here I was, just hearing that my lawyer, who was supposed to come here today, had already arrived in Pittsburgh for two days, doing god knows what. But, I had a hunch. I had a very strong hunch.

"And that is all for this week," Matthews said as he closed all the files of my official businesses and proceeded to open the ones that were on the little... illegal side.

"Tell me, Matthews." I suddenly said before he could do so.

"Yes, boss?" Matthews asked, attentive as he paused whatever he was doing, his attention fully on me.

"What kind of a guy do you think I am?" I asked.

"Pardon?" He was caught off guard on such a personal question as he added, "I don't understand."

He was right. The question was a little vague. So I asked again, "What kind of a boss do you think I am?"

"Benevolent?" He wasn't sure how to reply to that question so he just said that. Now that was an interesting way to put it if you had to ask me.

"Haha." I chuckled softly at his depiction of me. If he wasn't aware of me by now, then it was clear I had been lenient enough in front of him. Otherwise, had I not been kind to those who betrayed me, how would he have betrayed me?

"Drink this," I said as I slid my cup across to him. He looked at me with a puzzled look but I said nothing but simply, "Drink it."

He took the cup with slow but steady hands and took the cup, not being able to figure out what it was about and as he took a sip, he looked at me as if asking with his eyes, "What now?"

"Drink more," I said.

He drank more, and more until half of the cup was empty. I looked at him for a while before I deeply exhaled and asked, "You met someone else last week when you were here, didn't you?"

He stopped. He looked at me as if he had seen a ghost. I chuckled softly at him before I looked at him and said, "I guess I have been lenient."

I stood up, took the files, all of them, and left the cafe with the parting words, "Your services are no longer required."

I arrived at the hospital about at the same time as an ambulance entered the hospital premises.

I looked at the doctor trying to take the pressure and BP of the patient that had just been brought in. The patient was foaming at his mouth, a classic sign of poisoning.

[Serpent's greed]

[Grade: D]

[Description: A traceless poison extracted from the snakes found on the left side of the Blue Haven

They are quick and swift but are often caught by hunters as they manage to lure them out because of their greed for red meat]

[Effect: Kills anyone below two-star knight or one-circle mage]

[Has a lesser chance of working on two-star knights and one circle mage]

[Does not work on anyone above the aforementioned ranks]

[Cost: 1,000]

It was expensive but there was no need to overthink it. It would be traced to me because Matthews was seen with me at the cafe and he was also supposed to be here on official business. His death here would be all the more suspicious. Although the signs do indicate poison, if none was located, then it'd be a high class poison that wouldn't have been possible to get here in Pittsburgh.

The first trail would simply be a wild goose chase into where the poison came from and since that was a bust, it wouldn't be difficult for me to be exonerated on bogus charges or lack of evidence.

As I arrived at Betty's ward, I saw Steve just exiting the room. As he spotted me, he gauged me from head to toe once again before he asked, "How did you do it?"

"Do what?" I asked.

He looked at his soldiers before he looked at me once again before he shook his head and left, leaving his men with the words, "Don't stop him."

The soldiers nodded and Steve left, probably to check up on his men. When he was gone, I entered the room to see Sara cleaning Betty's wounds while Mira was doing a very clumsy job at peeling some apples.

"You're back," Betty said as soon as I entered. I nodded and handed them the coffees I had bought, of course, from the hospital and not the cafe I was at. That would be stupid.

"You're not fasting, are you?" I asked Betty. She had been given some medications but I hadn't seen instructions for fasting anywhere on her chart so I guessed it was okay.

Betty shook her head and said, "The doctor said I can eat or drink anything that's light. Not too heavy. Even with the medication, going to the bathroom is a bit..."

I guess it was embarrassing for her to say so she simply stopped there. I was aiming to be a doctor so I was kind of prone to that stuff and having lived a good portion of Rox's life and how I was immune to killing people, I had a good guess some poop and piss wouldn't disgust me either.

But it was probably more about her than me.

"The visiting hours are almost about to end so we'll have to come again tomorrow," Sara informed me once she finished Betty's wounds and Mira fed Betty the fruits and the coffee.

I nodded and looked at Betty, "Don't do anything outside without protection detail. If you're too uncomfortable about those guys outside, call me."

Betty nodded and I left the ward along with Sara and Mira. The drive back was awfully silent with none of the girls saying anything. As we arrived back home, I saw Aunt Elise in the kitchen. When she heard us coming, she asked worriedly, "How's Betty?"

"She's stabilized," Sara replied instead of me. I was still a bit conflicted around her so I decided to stay on the sidelines while the girls took care of the explanation.

I left for my room to freshen up and once I was done, I came out for dinner as Aunt Elise sat next to me like every day but today was a little... how should I say it... unsettling?

"I heard what happened to Betty." Tom suddenly said while I was busy being uncomfortable next to Aunt Elise who seemed normal as always.

"Yesh, it was unfortunate. Luckily she wasn't hurt a lot." Aunt Elise said. Well, the side of her left cheek had been scraped so I guess, to a girl, that was a lot but seeing and hearing about it were two different things.

Just as she was answering Tom, I felt a hand on my thigh that made me go wide-eyed. I looked down, just so lightly that someone wouldn't notice, and was horrified, I guess, to find out the woman who was nonchalantly answering her husband was inching closer and closer to my cock.

And...

She finally arrived at her destination.
