A day later,
In a pipe deep within Zaun.
"Tsk—" A dark-skinned boy with dreadlocks leaned against the pipe wall, clicking his tongue in frustration.
The furry Heimerdinger, seeing his expression, couldn't help but speak up. "Listen, young Ekko, I know you have some... minor grievances with the chosen one."
Heimerdinger pinched his fingers together, leaving a small gap between them.
"But take my advice, young Ekko!" Heimerdinger patiently advised. "I know you're troubled by the current situation and restless about the endless chaos. But you can't take it out on others."
"Besides, if you want to move forward, you need a strong heart."
"I know, Heimerdinger—" Ekko lowered his eyelids, his face twisted in conflict. "But I just... I just... ugh!"
"I understand, young Ekko, I understand!" Heimerdinger walked over and patted Ekko's leg. "You have plenty of time. Take it slow, and you'll get there."
"By the way, when is that guy supposed to show up?" Ekko looked around, but the man from three days ago was nowhere to be seen.
"Well, he's a chosen one. He wouldn't lie. He should—" Before Heimerdinger could finish, a fierce gust of wind swept through the pipe, forcing both of them to shield their eyes as their clothes flapped wildly.
When the wind died down, Ekko lowered his arm and blinked.
"That wind—"
"Look, young Ekko!" Heimerdinger suddenly exclaimed with joy. Ekko followed his gaze and saw a package with a note attached, addressed to Ekko.
"Is this from that guy?" Ekko took the package from Heimerdinger and opened it, finding a letter, a vial of potion, and a syringe.
He unfolded the letter, which contained a few hastily scribbled lines.
First, it explained how to use the potion and its precautions. Then, it gave the reason for the man's absence.
"Young Ekko, what does it say?" Heimerdinger looked up while Ekko handed him the letter. "He says he's in the middle of a battle today and couldn't make it, so he had Janna deliver the items instead."
"Ah—" Heimerdinger quickly read the letter and nodded. "So Janna was here. No wonder there was such a strong gust of wind!"
"Heimerdinger," Ekko suddenly spoke up. "What do you think about spreading the faith of Janna within the Firelights?"
"Janna is a kind and benevolent goddess who treats all her followers well. With Zaun in such chaos, having her faith could provide some stability."
"Hmm, I see. I'll discuss it with everyone when I get back."
Janna returned to the workshop in a gust of wind, immediately complaining, "Link, you insufferable brat! How dare you make a goddess like me play messenger!"
"Hey, new era, new methods. It's not like the old days when a gust of wind could win you a bunch of followers. You've got to keep up with the times!"
Link, who was adjusting the exoskeleton in front of him, didn't even look up. "Besides, isn't delivering packages just a flap of your wings for you?"
"But carrying packages is still a bit of a burden for me right now."
"Don't worry. Once the evaluation session starts, I'll help spread your faith. Just be patient a little longer!"
As Link spoke, he closed the chest armor of the exoskeleton and stepped back, admiring his work.
After a day and night of nonstop work, he had finally completed the upgrade.
Although it was just an upgrade to the original exoskeleton, its appearance was now vastly different.
First, micro electric engines were installed on the limbs to provide power, which meant the armor on the limbs had become thicker and bulkier.
At first glance, it looked like the limbs were encased in four go-kart tires, though the shape was more diamond-like, located on the forearms and calves.
The addition of the electric engines also changed the structure of the exoskeleton.
Unlike the previous integrated design, the new exoskeleton was more like a puzzle, with the limbs and torso able to be detached and reassembled separately.
This ensured that if any part of the exoskeleton was damaged, it wouldn't affect the operation of the other parts.
The torso was equipped with a dual-core engine, located on the shoulder blades like two folded shoulder cannons.
If time had allowed, Link would have turned these engines into actual shoulder cannons.
Because the exoskeleton now had a modular design, it required a tight-fitting leather suit as an underlayer, made from the hide of a river dragon and coated with a layer of high-strength rubber.
As for the head, Link hadn't made any changes.
The spider helmet was still perfectly functional and didn't need any modifications.
"You keep saying you'll help spread my faith, but you're still busy with your scientific inventions!" Janna landed on the spider helmet, grumbling.
"I need some self-defense capabilities, don't I?" Link chuckled, then added, "Alright, I'm about to suit up. Could you step out for a moment, my goddess?"
"Fine, fine—" Janna rolled her eyes and left.
Soon, Link, fully equipped, carried his helmet to Singed's laboratory.
The lab, originally a warehouse in the riverside workshop, was spacious, with thick walls and close to the canal docks. If anything went wrong, it wouldn't affect the outside world.
This made it the perfect place to test the clockwork electric exoskeleton.
As for Singed's equipment, it had all been temporarily moved elsewhere.
"Ready?"
Singed, hearing the noise behind him, stopped adjusting the chem-pump on Vander's back and turned to look at Link.
At first glance, Singed couldn't help but gasp.
"No matter how many times I see it, that armor is breathtakingly beautiful!"
In response to Singed's praise, Link simply shrugged.
"How's Vander?"
"All set. We can start anytime."
"In that case, release him!"
Link reached for his chest, where the armor's activation button was located—a dial-style clockwork starter.
He turned the dial to its limit until it popped up. At the same time, Singed pulled out a tube of thick blood.
"Then, let's begin!"
Singed threw the blood-filled tube at Link, shattering it in front of him. Link pressed the popped-up dial.
Instantly, the electric engines on his back lit up with a bright glow, and the micro engines on his limbs began to hum.
Feeling the exoskeleton tighten around him as it activated, Link twisted the filter on the right side of his spider helmet, causing it to pop open. He pressed it down firmly.
Blue Shimmer, made from blue sunflowers, vaporized into a mist and flowed into Link.
The edges of Link's black pupils glowed with a blue light, and the capillaries at the corners of his eyes swelled from the Shimmer. His heart roared like an engine as he exhaled slowly.
The thick blood spread across the floor, and the metallic scent of rust filled the lab.
Vander's nose twitched as his back began to spasm, steam billowing from the chem-pump on his spine.
The spasms spread to his limbs, causing the chains to rattle and slowly slide out of his flesh.
As the chains fell away, Vander's nose wrinkled, folding the skin on his face.
His eyelids twitched violently as he slid to the ground. The moment the last hook came loose, his eyes snapped open.
They were blood red.
"ROAR—"
