It was impossible to react to. All Neply could remember was his hair standing on end and himself being blinded by the light. A flickering sensation followed and a storm of lightning approached them.
"What the f-" the raging elements struck him square in the chest badly but he would survive.
Neply looked around. Bodies filled his surroundings but the artillery was too far behind him to have survived injuries. It could be said that activating the trap was the job of his squad.
In the small meteor with residue fire, Neply saw a soldier with barely any armor struggling to survive. He slowly, calmly walked over emotionlessly.
Neply arrived and the soldier desperately clung to his arm. "Lightning mage! It was their princess! She somehow put her magic into a land mine and this was the result," he coughed out.
Neply remained still as the soldier began to plead. "I've got a family back home and all I want is for them to know how much I loved them. Please, please take this photo and send the message to-"
"It doesn't matter," Neply finally said with a cold face. "Your life, your goals, your family, they were all to weak to be important. You died meaninglessly because those stronger than you demanded it and your family will likely suffer the same fate."
The soldier began to crumble. "What about your loved ones!" He shouted in anger despite the fact he was nearly dead. "Would you say the same abo-"
"I don't have anybody like that," Neply tried his hardest remain emotionless this time but cracks started to appear in his persona. He was slightly tearing up and losing his voice.
"Then why did you join?" The soldier asked while dying.
Neply looked at the destruction rampaging everywhere. Why had he joined the war? He could've lived in peace alone. It would be lonely but he would be alive.
He arrived at an answer and tears began to flow out like a river from him. "I joined because I'm too much of a pussy to commit suicide. I- I thought I would rather die like a hero in battle then by some fucking rope!" He quivered and trembled endlessly.
"Never had I known how wrong I was! Look around. We are all useless sheep sent to die for being weak! There is no hero! There is no meaning to any of this! Our lives never mattered because they weren't ours to control!"
The tempature inside the crator grew immensely. The grass started to light aflame as the sigil on Nelly's forehead shook uncontrollably like his emotions.
Soon, Neply realized he was talking to a corpse instead of a soldier. "Ha! Hahaha!" He laughed relentlessly at the foolishness of the scene playing in front of him. His calm composure couldn't be kept and the madness of war swept over him.
"I tried to be cool like those stories! Like those people who always act smug and are in control of everything!" He screamed out. "But my life is meaningless. I've got nobody who'll even care if I'll die but I can't commit suicide."
"So I'll try my best to fake being a hero. Hopefully, I can finally die."
A raging souls stormed across the battlefield with a devastating fire following him. The fire he emitted soon turned blue as his sigil began to destroy his body. That didn't stop him though.
He ran on all fours like a hellhound and washed anything he could see in endless flames and attacks. Nobody stood a chance.
He clawed his hands into the chest of another before they burnt to ashes and moved next as he rampaged forward. He was an unstoppable force that destroyed his opponents constantly.
That was until a certain mage appeared before him.
*Bang! A shot rang out from a middle-aged woman with water bullets floating around her. "I never thought somebody strong like you would appear on this battlefield."
Neply tried to ignore her because of the obvious strength difference but found himself cut off by a wall of water. "Although you are strong, this is the worst matchup for you," he heard.
Neply immediately attack without care because his blue flames were hot enough to cut through water. He recklessly swung his entire arm and a massive diagonal slice of fire followed.
An equally massive wall of water rose and the two clashed. The fire easily melted through the first layer but the water kept being regenerated over and over again until the two stood against each other yet again.
"More concentration!" Thought Neply as his fire became nearly solid in his hands. All of his energy was being condensed until a lengthy pole of condensed fire formed and he pulled back his arm.
His body was magically strengthened so as he threw the pole of fire the sound barrier around him shattered and he destroyed the concrete when he dashed forward towards his opponent.
The woman water mage narrowly dodged the pole of flames but quickly found the tempature around her increasing uncontrollably. She looked and saw the hellish blue figure of Neply extending his arms out to her.
"Even though I'm a master mage, one touch and I'm dead!" She thought.
Instantly, a burst of water exploded between the two as several hundred water bullets rained to step Neply's advance. The woman began to concentrate once more as tendrils of water sprouted from the floor.
"Your usage of your magic is strong but you are reckless. Just look at yourself," the woman said.
Neply was trembling beyond belief and he was barely on all fours. Pure adrenaline was keeeping him even upright but they both knew he would soon fall.
"You won't understand this completely because you're a barbarian but I'll try to explain it easily for you. Your sigil acts like an organ similar to your heart. Think about what would happen if you forced your heart to beat 100 times per second. That is literally what you are doing to yourself by stressing your sigil," the woman explained.
Neply raged forward regardless. They both knew his time was short but he was still trying to selfishly die like a hero.
"I can't get through her defenses!"
