Chapter 8: The First Step Outside
The morning sun filtered softly through the cabin's windows, casting gentle beams across the room. Lin Yue awoke slowly, the familiar sounds of birds chirping outside lulling her from the haze of sleep. Her body felt lighter than it had in months, the fatigue from her prolonged rest slowly fading. It was finally time to leave the safety of the space they had come to call home.
Li Wei stood near the window, his figure framed by the light, staring out at the forest beyond. His sharp eyes betrayed no emotion, but Lin Yue knew better. After months of confinement, he had made up his mind. Today, they would venture into the outside world once more.
Lin Yue stretched languidly, the remnants of her rest still clinging to her, but a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. "I've been waiting for this," she replied, her voice soft but firm. There was excitement in her heart, though it was tinged with the weight of the unknown.
The morning began in familiar chaos. The children were already up, filling the cabin with their bright energy. Qin Ze, Ren An, Ling Xue, and Jian Yu were all buzzing with excitement, their voices a cacophony of youthful joy. Even the twins were gurgling happily in their cradle, their small hands reaching out for anything within their grasp.
"Good morning, little ones," Lin Yue greeted with a warm smile.
"Morning, Mama!" they called in unison, their eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Li Wei moved toward the table where the simple breakfast had already been prepared. "Jian Yu," he called to their eldest, "take care of the twins today. They'll be staying close by, and we'll need you to keep an eye on them."
Jian Yu nodded solemnly, though his small face radiated pride at being entrusted with such an important task. "I will, Father."
Lin Yue nodded approvingly before she handed each child their portion of food. "Eat up," she said gently. "It's going to be a long day."
She called on Fei Feng and asked him to take care of the kids while they were gone.
Once the children were off to their tasks, Lin Yue and Li Wei moved to gather their supplies. Lin Yue's hands were steady as she checked the contents of their inventory, making sure nothing was left behind. She retrieved a small drone from the space, its sleek, metallic body gleaming faintly.
"This should help us see more of the forest than we can on foot," Lin Yue said, handing it to Li Wei.
He raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by the technology. "How does it work?" he asked, examining it closely.
"Watch," she said with a small smile. With a swift press of a button, the drone hummed to life, its wings buzzing as it took flight, hovering above them.
Li Wei held the small screen in his hand as the drone shot up into the air. On the display, the vastness of the forest unfolded before them, its dark green canopy stretching as far as the eye could see. A sense of awe swept over him, but Lin Yue's voice snapped him back to focus.
"We need to move quickly," she said, adjusting the drone's altitude. "The entrance to the mist forest is still a long way from here."
They set off, walking side by side through the dense trees. The path was familiar, yet it felt different now. After months of confinement, the open air seemed both exhilarating and intimidating. With every step, Lin Yue felt the weight of their journey ahead.
For hours, they walked. The forest seemed to stretch on endlessly, with the path growing more treacherous with each passing mile. The mist thickened, curling around the trees like a living thing, but they pressed on. Lin Yue's mind remained focused on the task at hand. The mist forest was vast and dangerous, but not impenetrable.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, they reached the entrance. The towering trees parted just enough to reveal the clearing that marked the edge of the forest. But as they drew closer, a chill ran down Lin Yue's spine.
Guards.
At the entrance stood several men, cloaked in dark fabric, their postures rigid as they scanned the area with piercing eyes. They were stationed there for a reason, and it was clear they were not welcoming strangers.
"We won't be able to get past them without a fight," Li Wei murmured, his hand instinctively reaching for his sword.
Lin Yue studied the scene, her sharp mind working. "There has to be another way," she whispered, before her eyes darted to the hovering drone. An idea sparked in her mind, and she quickly activated the device.
With a few quick commands, the drone emitted a strange, eerie sound—an unsettling, hollow echo that reverberated through the forest. The guards, startled, turned their heads toward the source of the noise. They exchanged confused glances, unsure of what they were hearing.
"It's working," Lin Yue whispered. "Now, move."
Taking advantage of the distraction, they slipped past the guards, moving silently through the trees. The mist seemed to part for them, as though the forest itself was giving them passage. They moved quickly, their hearts pounding as they ventured farther from the safety of their hidden space.
As they crossed the threshold into the unknown, Li Wei squeezed Lin Yue's hand. "That was impressive," he said, his voice filled with admiration.
Lin Yue smiled, a twinkle in her eye. "It's all about thinking outside the box."
For the first time in months, they were free. The forest, which had once felt like a prison, now seemed like a distant memory. As they continued on, their steps lightened, and the weight of their burdens seemed to lessen, if only for a moment. The future ahead was uncertain, but together, they were ready to face whatever it might bring.
