The staircase spiraled upward, its steps uneven and worn with age. A faint wind whistled through the cracks, carrying with it a strange melody—half haunting, half calming.
Xu Tian glanced upward, squinting into the dim light filtering through the ceiling far above. "This staircase goes on forever! Who builds something like this? And why?!"
Wei Ling, a few steps ahead, called back, "Maybe it's an endurance test. Or maybe the architect just hated people."
"Both are equally likely," Yue Lin added, steadying herself on the wall as the wind picked up.
As they climbed, the group noticed a narrow side passage branching off from the main staircase. A faint golden light emanated from within, casting enticing shadows on the walls.
Xu Tian stopped, staring at the passage with suspicion. "Nope. No way. That's obviously a trap."
Wei Ling grinned. "Or it's a shortcut. It's glowing. Shortcuts glow, right?"
Shen Feng hesitated, examining the entrance. The light seemed inviting, but there was an unnatural stillness about it. "Let's not rush in. There's something off about this."
Xu Tian threw up his hands. "Finally, some caution! See? Shen Feng agrees with me. That's character growth, right there."
Before anyone could decide, the golden light flared, and a figure emerged—a robed man with a long beard and a serene smile.
"Greetings, travelers," the man said, his voice warm and melodious. "You look weary. Come, rest a while. There is no need to struggle further."
The man gestured toward the passage, revealing a cozy chamber filled with cushions, food, and glowing orbs that radiated comfort.
Xu Tian's stomach growled audibly. "I don't trust this, but...that food looks amazing."
Wei Ling took a step forward. "Maybe we can just take a quick break. Recharge, you know?"
Yue Lin grabbed his arm. "Don't be stupid. This is obviously a test. Or a trap. Or both."
The man chuckled softly. "You wound me with your distrust. I merely wish to help weary souls find peace."
Shen Feng narrowed his eyes, gripping the talisman. "If you truly wish to help, then answer this: what lies at the top of this staircase?"
The man's serene expression faltered for a brief moment. "Why would you seek the top, when everything you desire is here?"
Xu Tian stepped forward, pointing dramatically. "Aha! Suspicious answer! I knew it!"
Shen Feng raised the talisman, its glow intensifying. The man flinched, his serene smile twisting into a snarl.
"Fools!" he hissed, his form shimmering and breaking apart like shards of glass. "You dare reject the comforts I offer?"
The cozy chamber dissolved, replaced by a jagged, dark cavern filled with writhing shadows. The "man" revealed its true form—a grotesque, insect-like creature with glowing red eyes and elongated limbs.
Xu Tian recoiled. "I knew it! Evil glowing bug monster! Why is it always evil glowing bug monsters?"
The creature lunged at them, its claws slashing through the air.
Wei Ling charged forward, meeting the creature head-on. "Finally, something I can punch!"
His fists collided with the creature's chitinous shell, sending cracks spidering across its surface. The creature shrieked, its claws lashing out. Wei Ling dodged, grinning. "That all you've got?"
Yue Lin moved with precision, her blade slicing through the creature's legs. "Don't get cocky, Wei Ling. These things always have tricks."
The creature reared back, emitting a high-pitched screech that sent waves of force rippling through the cavern. The group staggered, clutching their ears.
Shen Feng activated the talisman, its light forming a protective barrier around them. "Focus! It's trying to disorient us!"
Xu Tian, crouching behind a rock, grabbed a handful of loose stones and hurled them at the creature. "Take that! And that! And...okay, I'm out of stones."
One of the stones hit the creature square in the eye, causing it to flail wildly.
Wei Ling glanced back. "Nice shot, Xu Tian!"
"Uh, yeah," Xu Tian said, puffing out his chest. "Totally intentional."
As the creature writhed, Shen Feng stepped forward, his sword glowing with the talisman's energy. With a swift, decisive strike, he pierced the creature's core.
The monster let out a final, earsplitting shriek before disintegrating into ash. The cavern trembled, then began to crumble.
"Time to go!" Yue Lin shouted, pulling Xu Tian to his feet.
The group sprinted back to the main staircase, the cavern collapsing behind them. As they emerged, the staircase seemed to shimmer, and the golden light reappeared—this time forming a clear path upward.
Shen Feng exhaled, wiping sweat from his brow. "It's over. For now."
Xu Tian slumped against the wall. "If this is the middle of the journey, I don't even want to think about the end."
Wei Ling clapped him on the back. "Cheer up, Xu Tian. At least you got to fight an evil glowing bug monster."
"Fight?" Xu Tian said indignantly. "I threw rocks!"
"And it worked," Yue Lin said with a rare smile. "Let's keep moving."
The group resumed their climb, the staircase no longer feeling quite so endless.
