"Vallerie, I swear it won't happen again," Patrick promised.

I stood up, went to the bedroom, retrieved a box from a drawer, and presented it to Patrick. "Here's your birthday present."

Patrick accepted the box, his face brightening. "Vallerie, you remembered my birthday after all?"

He eagerly opened the box to find a ring and an aged, discolored medical document inside.

Patrick looked puzzled, but upon reading the paper, he was shocked.

"Vallerie, when did this occur? Why didn't you inform me?"

"It happened on your birthday last year. I intended to tell you, but you went stargazing with Samuel. I was distraught, and I miscarried a few days later."

"Vallerie, it wasn't like that. I had no idea. At the time, her condition was critical, and the doctor advised us to keep her content. I had to..."

"It's irrelevant now, you know? It doesn't matter anymore." I said, exiting the bedroom for the living area.
