Magnus appeared anxious, as if concerned I might reconsider. He gently pulled at my sleeve, seemingly urging me on.

"I've got this under control," I assured him.

He nodded, and I turned to address my former spouse. "Simon, this will be our final conversation. Understand this: you're far too self-centered to be my partner again. However, for Sylvia, you'll always be ideal—you two are cut from the same cloth. Just await her release from prison, and then formalize your relationship with her. Now, I'm done with all this drama. I'm moving on."

He looked at me, but his eyes were lifeless and vacant, as if words had deserted him as well.

There was an almost poignant quality to his expression—as if he had surrendered to despair.

But I chose to disregard it and instead led Magnus towards my home.

The moment my parents saw Magnus, they greeted him enthusiastically, bombarding him with questions about his profession, romantic life, well-being, and general existence.
