Initially, my partner seemed startled, but then he approached with a crooked grin.
"My Sweet," he said, caressing my cheek as I nearly recoiled. "I adore this envious side of you. It demonstrates your possessiveness."
"You still haven't addressed my inquiry," I asserted, lifting my chin defiantly. "Who is this individual you consider more deserving than me?"
"No one, my dear," he replied, shaking his head.
I smiled wryly, seeing through his deception.
"I have something for you," I announced, retrieving an item from my dress pocket and presenting him with a necklace.
"What's this, my love?" he inquired.
"A small gift," I explained. "Keep it around your neck always for good fortune."
Ragnulf examined the pendant, his face beaming with appreciation. "Certainly, my dear." Suddenly, his expression shifted from pleased to concerned.
"What's wrong?" I asked, gazing into his steely grey eyes.
"I've just received word from Enzo."
"Your Beta?"
He nodded distractedly, then looked at me sharply. "I must go," he said, hastily moving away. "Rogues at the border. All men are gathering there!"
I felt immediate concern for his safety. "Be careful!" I called out, but he had already vanished.
As I returned to the main hall where my birthday celebration was taking place, something caught my attention, and I halted.
In my previous life, I had been unaware of outside events due to staying indoors. Now, I witnessed one of the pack girls sneaking into a room with one of my husband's soldiers.
If there was truly a rogue attack at the border, shouldn't he be accompanying my husband?
I dismissed the thought and continued walking, then noticed a group of women packing food from my party and waiting for a carriage to load it.
I approached them. "Ladies."
They bowed their heads respectfully upon seeing me.
"Where is all this food going?"
The women exchanged glances. "To the Tavern, my Luna."
The Tavern, I recalled, was where celebrations for the King's soldiers were held so they wouldn't have to leave their posts. If food was being taken there, it meant they hadn't gone to defend the border.
I needed to see this for myself.
I immediately mindlinked my maid. "Ready the horses. We're going to the tavern."
"The Tavern?" my maid replied, surprised.
"Yes. Hurry."
Soon after, I was disguised in ordinary attire with my maid beside me as we departed. During the journey, I pondered all the times Ragnulf had fabricated reasons to leave me alone.
Could he have been unfaithful then?
A dreadful chill ran through me at the stark realization. Goddess! I hoped I was mistaken.
Upon reaching my destination and nearing the small building, I took deep breaths to steady my nerves.
Perhaps Ragnulf didn't require all his men at the border, but he would surely need Enzo, right?
I entered the tavern, struggling to move forward.
To my utter astonishment, not only did I find Enzo relaxing in the private area, but upon entering, I discovered something else entirely.
Concealing myself in a corner, I observed about a dozen women standing naked in a line facing none other than my supposed husband.
Among them was Jeanette - a blonde with the most prominent chest of all.
As Ragnulf inspected the nude women, it suddenly became clear that this was the breeder selection. This was where Ragnulf began actively cheating on me.
Each woman was summoning her wolf, and after some observation, Ragnulf let his nose guide him to Jeanette's body.
She smiled as he buried his nose in her neck, indicating her selection, and when he kissed her, my heart constricted in agony.
What followed left me repulsed.
The other women were distributed among the soldiers, and a full-scale orgy ensued right in the tavern.
I stood in shock as I watched my husband enter Jeanette and begin to couple with her passionately. He threw his head back in pleasure while Jeanette's eyes were closed in ecstasy.
Then, lies from the past resurfaced in my mind. I remembered Enzo introducing Jeanette to me as his cousin when she frequently visited my home and my husband's office for no apparent reason.
I had been at ease and even friendly with her until she became pregnant with no official mate to claim paternity. That's when I discovered it was my husband's child.
I shook my head as I exited the building. How could I have been so naive and foolish?
All this time, not only had Ragnulf been deceiving me, but his Beta had been doing the same.
No matter. It's fine. Soon, I will bring about their downfall.
