The following day at lunch, I took my usual seat at the long table where I dine with high-ranking officials and their spouses or mates. I engaged in pleasant conversation while waiting for the meal to be served and Ragnulf to arrive.

To my irritation, Jeanette appeared at the table and seated herself across from me, near Ragnulf's chair.

I stiffened as the table fell silent and all eyes fixed intently on her.

"Are you lost?" inquired the Gamma's wife. "This table is reserved for high-ranking officials. What makes you think you can sit here?"

Jeanette merely tossed her hair back and poured herself some water. "My mate holds a very high position. I have a right to be here because of him. You should all mind how you address me."
