As consciousness returned, William's face came into view.
His expression was pensive, eyes tinged with red.
The instant he noticed I was awake, he clasped my hand.

"Emberly, I heard from the doctor about your abortion appointment yesterday. What's going on?" he inquired. "Are you planning to leave?"
I withdrew my hand. "Yes, I'm going to leave."
His body trembled as he leaned in closer. "But why? Is it because of the pregnancy? Or because I made you wait outside?"
I could feel his breath on my neck, unable to see his face.
"Haven't you been anticipating Lilah's availability? Isn't that why you avoided marriage?" I responded. "She's single now. You two can finally be together."
William sat up straight, gently holding my face.
"There's nothing romantic between Lilah and me, you know that. Will was like a brother to me—what's wrong with me supporting his sister?"
At the mention of Will, we both fell silent.
