My eyes welled up and my voice quavered as I asked, "Why didn't you inform me earlier?"

My mother exhaled deeply, her words laced with remorse, "I had no say in the matter. That young man insisted I keep quiet. He believed you ended the marriage out of hatred for him. He worried that if you discovered he was your benefactor, you'd reject treatment just to defy him."

A knot formed in my stomach.

"You should have seen his joy when he heard you finally accepted the wedding proposal," my mother added, her tone melancholic. "He wanted to expedite the ceremony—fearing you might vanish again."

Her words lingered heavily. I glanced at Sebastian, the man who had been my constant support. This individual, who never mentioned his actions, had quietly shouldered the burden of saving me.

"Why keep it from me?" I inquired, barely audible.
