The murmurs around me intensified, a surge of criticism washing over me.

"Shouldn't saving a life be the top priority, especially since he was injured trying to protect you? What's there to think about? I just can't comprehend it!"

"How can she be so heartless?"

I remained still on the seat, my mouth firmly shut, unyielding as a stubborn stone.

Faced with my silence, Alastor, nearly fainting, gripped my trouser leg, his hold desperate as he pleaded.

"Verena, what about this?"

"If you go in and rescue him, we'll give you the house and car as a sign of our appreciation..."

Upon hearing the proposal, I finally lifted my eyes.

Seeing my expression soften, Alastor's face brightened with hope, his chest heaving as he thumped it triumphantly.

"Verena, don't fret, I promise!"

"If you save Matias, the house, the car, even our entire savings, they're all yours!"

A wave of surprise rippled through the onlookers.

Everyone was touched by the extent of Alastor's paternal love.

I looked at him, my mind quietly assessing the situation.

The total value of his house, car, and savings easily reached millions.

Trading my career for that wasn't such a bad deal.

However, I raised my gaze again, my voice tinged with apparent reluctance.

"Fine, I'll rescue him. But..."

Alastor's face immediately lit up, his eyes fixed on mine with eager anticipation.

I spoke slowly, as if each word was a burden.

"But you need to sign an agreement with me first. Without it, how can I be sure you won't change your mind later?"

At this, Alastor's smile wavered, disbelief flashing across his face.

Milana could no longer contain herself; her voice trembled with raw emotion as she exclaimed.

"Matias is in a critical state! How can we waste time on paperwork?"

"My poor boy! How did he end up with such an ungrateful wife?"

I shrugged helplessly, my tone remaining steady.

"No agreement, no operation."

The crowd muttered again, their voices heavy with disapproval.

Some of the more agitated onlookers looked ready to lash out in their frustration.

Just then, another nurse burst through the door, her uniform stained with blood.

Her voice quivered, a mix of shock and urgency in her words.

"The patient just lost consciousness. Before he did, he asked me to relay a message."

"He said to stop pressuring Verena. He understands how hard she worked for this position."

The news of Matias losing consciousness caused Milana to crumple to the ground, her sorrow too overwhelming to bear.

Her face was pale, her body shaking so violently that words seemed impossible to form.

Tears streamed down Alastor's cheeks, his anguish evident as he fell to his knees, his head hitting the floor with such force it seemed he might choke on his own grief.

Through gritted teeth, he gasped, his words barely audible.

"His life hangs in the balance. I'll honor every promise. Just... please..."

I glanced at the older couple, their faces etched with concern and fatigue, and for a moment, uncertainty clouded my thoughts.

Having lost my parents at a young age, the concept of family love had always seemed foreign to me.

But meeting Matias changed things. He had introduced me to his parents early on, and their warmth was something I'd never experienced before.

The Campbells, so kind and genuine, had never once made me feel less because of my background. They had welcomed me as one of their own, showing me a level of care that left an indelible mark on my heart.
