Chapter 14
"That was truly impressive, and I can see you growing strong in the near future, but it isn't enough. So I'm here to tell you to grow stronger quickly because they are starting to make their moves," the mage said.
"Making their moves? Who are they?" Grey asked, raising a brow.
"The Otherworlders," the mage replied.
"Otherworlders? Who are they?" Grey asked, feeling tense.
"I just told you who is making their moves. It's not yet time for you to know their background," the mage retorted.
Grey didn't press further. He knew that no matter how much he asked, the mage wouldn't reveal more unless he was ready. Instead, he focused on the next pressing issue.
"You say you need me to grow stronger, but how am I supposed to do that when I don't even know my affinities, how to unlock them, or have spell books to help me progress?
So unless you have spell books or something similar, there's nothing I can do to rush my progress." Grey folded his arms, waiting for a response.
The mage leaned back in his chair, stroking his beard thoughtfully.
"Actually, I think I can help with that." He clicked his fingers together.
"How so?" Grey asked, raising a brow.
"By providing you with what you need." The mage smiled, snapping his fingers again.
In an instant, several books materialized before Grey. He counted them—five in total. As he flipped through their pages, his eyes gleamed with excitement, realizing their immense value.
"These books contain skills, spells, and instructional guides. They will help you progress in your training, unlock your affinities, master new spells, and learn how to use them effectively in battle," the mage explained.
"You're… you're giving me all these for free?" Grey stuttered, glancing between the books and the mage.
The mage burst into laughter. "For free? Hahaha! No! I expect results. But given how quickly you progress, that shouldn't be a problem."
Grey frowned, wondering just how dangerous these Otherworlders were to make the mage so serious and urgent about his growth.
He knew the mage was incredibly powerful, so the fact that these Otherworlders had him so worked up was unsettling.
'Whatever. As long as I get stronger, I don't care who his enemies are.' Grey thought, skimming through the books again.
"I can see you've unlocked wind and fire affinities. Your wind affinity is quite high, but your fire affinity is still weak," the mage observed, staring into Grey's eyes.
"How… how do you know that?" Grey asked, raising a brow.
"Oh? You haven't unlocked that yet?" The mage smacked his forehead.
"Unlocked what?" Grey asked, growing impatient.
"You have a special attribute, just like I do. And one of its abilities is called Appraisal."
Grey's eyes widened. "Special attribute? You mean—"
"Chaos, space, time, and so on," the mage confirmed.
"Correct. These special attributes are rare. To my knowledge, only you and I possess them. And with them comes the Appraisal skill."
"What does Appraisal do?" Grey asked, intrigued.
"What is appraisal? It is a skill that allows us to see the stats of other mages, we can see how many elements they have, how strong they are, what their elements are, and lastly the color grade of their elements." The first mage explained.
Grey's eyes lit up. "That sounds so cool!"
"It is. The best part? It doesn't require mana—just your thoughts."
"So how do I unlock it?" Grey asked eagerly.
With a sigh, the mage stood up and walked over to Grey, who was still seated on his bed. Closing his eyes, he performed intricate hand signs and began chanting.
Trusting the mage, Grey remained still, allowing him to continue without interruption.
Moments later, the mage placed a finger on Grey's left eye.
A sharp pain shot through Grey's eye, and he instinctively tried to pull away. "What the hell?! Have you lost it, old man? Are you trying to blind me?!"
"Stop moving! Stay still, or you really will go blind!" The mage snapped.
Grey hesitated but eventually complied, though his face twitched in pain. After a few agonizing minutes, the mage stepped back, his work complete.
"You can open your eyes now," he said.
"Are you sure? What if I open them and find out I'm blind?" Grey asked skeptically.
Just then, a crackling sound echoed through the room, and he sensed the familiar presence of mana.
Alarmed, Grey snapped his eyes open, only to see the mage sitting before him with a sinister grin, a massive flame swirling around his hand.
"Are you insane?! Do you want to kill me?!" Grey shouted.
"Are you blind?" The mage asked casually, extinguishing the fire.
Grey touched his face and blinked. Not only could he see, but his vision was sharper than before. He exhaled in relief.
"Now, how do I activate Appraisal?" Grey asked.
Suddenly, his left eye's vision darkened, then turned blue. A floating screen materialized in front of him, filled with symbols and text.
Grey's heart pounded as he looked around, seeing mana flow through the air as if it were tangible. But what intrigued him most was the sight of the mage himself.
Runic symbols appeared over the mage's body, and Grey prepared to analyze his stats.
"Time to see how strong you really are," Grey murmured with a smirk.
A second later, his smirk vanished.
All of the mage's information read as '???'.
"What the hell?!" Grey exclaimed.
