The chief surgeon arrived tardily, his demeanor as frosty as his reputation. Once the Davidson family's doctor, he was known for his unquestioning compliance.

However, when a patient failed to return for a post-abortion check-up, he felt compelled to inquire about her well-being.

"Mr. Davidson, how is your wife faring? Was the embryo preserved?"

Emmett was paralyzed with shock, his drenched attire clinging to him as if trying to drag him down. His legs wobbled, and he struggled to breathe.
