A Reluctant Bond

Wet, rough, and stinky licks jolted Ezra awake. He sat up abruptly, clutching his head, only to feel an odd absence of pain. He stretched cautiously, realizing with growing disbelief that the searing wounds and aching muscles from earlier were gone. It was as though his body had never been injured at all.

His hand froze mid-stretch as a pungent smell hit his nose. "Why do I smell like fish?" he muttered. His sharp lavender eyes darted around the dim chamber. The blood covering him was fresh and real, but everything else felt surreal—until something soft nudged against him.

He turned slowly, his breath hitching when he saw it. A massive white feline, its fur sleek and striped with jagged black markings, was rubbing itself against him. Its crystal blue eyes locked onto his, mirroring his movements as it cocked its head curiously to the side.

"Oh, hell no," Ezra muttered, his voice rising as panic set in. He scrambled to his feet, taking a cautious step back. The feline's head tilted further, watching him with a mix of curiosity and amusement.

Without another thought, Ezra turned and bolted.

He didn't get far. The feline pounced, landing squarely on his back and knocking him to the ground with ease. He groaned as the creature pinned him, its weight far heavier than he anticipated.

"Is this it? Are you going to eat me now?" Ezra grumbled, twisting his neck to glare at the beast. "You should've done it earlier! Food is better when it's fresh!"

The feline made a low, rumbling sound—not quite a growl but something closer to a playful chuff.

Summoning every ounce of strength he had, Ezra shoved against the creature with all his might. Somehow, he managed to push it off and stumbled to his feet. "Not today!" he shouted, sprinting toward the exit.

The feline, however, seemed to think this was a game. It bounded after him effortlessly, its movements fluid and almost playful. Ezra's heart pounded as he darted through the chamber, his feet slipping on the slick marble floor.

"Stop chasing me!" he yelled, glancing over his shoulder.

The feline responded by pouncing again, its massive paws landing just inches behind him. Ezra barely avoided it, twisting sharply to the side.

"This is not how I planned to die!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the cavern.

But the beast didn't strike or snarl. It stayed close, its sharp eyes gleaming with something that Ezra could only describe as… amusement. As if it were enjoying this.

Ezra soon gave up on the idea of running. It wasn't like he had a choice—there was no outrunning the massive feline. Instead, he sank to the floor, panting, his back pressed against the cool marble wall as the creature circled him.

Now they sat face-to-face, their gazes locked. Ezra narrowed his eyes, studying the feline. Its sleek white fur glinted faintly in the dim light, the black stripes along its body giving it a regal yet wild appearance. The crystal blue eyes watching him were unnervingly intelligent, as if it were trying to figure him out just as much as he was trying to make sense of it.

"What the heck is this thing?" he muttered under his breath, leaning forward slightly. "A guardian? A pet? A giant cat? Why didn't it eat me?"

The feline tilted its head at his words, mirroring his movement with an almost uncanny precision. It was unnerving, to say the least. Ezra swallowed hard, his mind racing with possibilities.

Then, without warning, the feline moved closer, its enormous body pressing against him. Ezra stiffened as its soft fur brushed against his cheek. It wasn't threatening—far from it. The creature purred softly, the sound a deep, rhythmic rumble that resonated in his chest.

"Soft…" The word slipped out before he could stop himself, his hand instinctively reaching up to touch the creature's head.

The feline froze for a moment, its ears twitching. Then it leaned into his touch, its eyes half-closing as though savoring the attention. Ezra's fingers trailed through its fur, and he couldn't help but admit that it felt… nice.

"Alright," Ezra muttered, his voice softer now. "Maybe you're not so bad after all."

The cat, apparently delighted by this turn of events, suddenly pounced on him, knocking him flat onto his back. Ezra let out a startled yell, his arms flailing as the feline pinned him once more.

"Hey! What—no! Not again!" he protested, though his words were lost amidst the creature's playful growls.

It lowered its head, nuzzling against his chest, and Ezra groaned in exasperation.

"You're seriously enjoying this, aren't you?"

The feline responded by rubbing its massive head against his neck, purring louder.

Ezra sighed, his initial panic fading into reluctant acceptance. "Fine. I still don't trust you "

The feline chuffed softly, its crystal blue eyes gleaming with amusement. For the first time since entering the cave, Ezra allowed himself to relax, his hand tentatively stroking the creature's fur once more.

"You nearly ripped me to pieces before, and now you're acting all cute and lovey-dovey?" Ezra said, glaring at the massive feline sprawled across his chest.

The creature stilled, its ears flattening against its head, and for a moment, it looked genuinely ashamed. Its crystal blue eyes flicked away, as if it couldn't bear to meet his gaze. Then, without warning, it leaned down and licked his face—a wet, rough gesture that left Ezra sputtering.

"What—stop that!" he protested, trying to shove its massive head away. But the feline ignored him, its tongue trailing over his cheek and hair in what could only be described as an awkward attempt at an apology.

Ezra wiped his face with a groan, glaring at the creature. "Is this supposed to make up for you trying to eat me earlier? Because I'm not convinced."

The feline let out a low, apologetic rumble, its head lowering further as it nudged against his chest. It licked him again, this time more gently, before resting its massive head in his lap, its ears still pressed flat.

Ezra sighed, his annoyance fading into reluctant acceptance as he looked down at the remorseful beast. "You're lucky you're cute. Otherwise, we'd be having a very different conversation right now."

The feline chuffed softly, its tail swishing across the floor in what looked like relief. Ezra couldn't help but smirk, shaking his head. "Alright, fine. Apology accepted. But don't think this means you're off the hook."

The feline tilted its head, its eyes wide and sparkling with what could almost be interpreted as gratitude. Ezra rolled his eyes, muttering under his breath, "You're definitely not normal. But I guess that makes two of us."

He patted its head lightly, and the feline purred, the sound vibrating through his lap.
