After concluding the call, he embraced Kate from behind, grinning.
"Sweetheart, you're stunning in anything. There's a small issue at work, so I might not be able to join you. Choose whichever one you prefer!"
Kate recognized this as a mere pretext, aware he was actually planning to go shopping with Leona.
She simply nodded, without pressing the matter further.
Once he departed, Kate summoned the maid. Gazing at the bridal gowns before her, she spoke icily, "Incinerate all these dresses. Leave none behind."
Despite her curiosity, the maid dared not question and merely complied obediently.
As the wedding attire turned to ash, it seemed as if her two years of feelings were also being consumed by the flames.
A fierce rage welled up in Kate's heart, as if it were shattering all worldly constraints.
That evening, she noticed Leona's social media update.
Dave had lavishly purchased her a new purse and other luxuries.
Observing the image, a slight smirk formed on Kate's lips.
She had determined her gift for them—a bespoke folding fan she had commissioned herself.
Initially intended for her wedding day, it now appeared superfluous.
Since Leona coveted her possessions so much, Kate decided to bestow everything upon her.
The day of Kate's departure would coincide with their gift reception. She would certainly wish them eternal bliss.
When Dave returned that night, he remembered to bring Kate's favorite chestnuts.
"On my way back, I stumbled upon someone selling roasted chestnuts, so I got some for you."
He had already peeled a few.
Kate was momentarily taken aback. She recalled her fondness for roasted chestnuts.
But since childhood, Leona had always rivaled her for everything—whatever Kate liked, Leona desired too.
Kate's face grew stern, her expression inscrutable. "No, I don't want any."
Dave assumed Kate was still upset about the day's events. He drew her into his arms. "Darling, I genuinely had work matters to attend to earlier. It wasn't that I didn't want to be with you. And you look lovely in anything, so I'm naturally at ease."
These words now held no weight in Kate's mind.
She remembered Dave's words to Leona. The thought repulsed her.
She softly pushed Dave away, her voice steady and emotionless.
"Fine."
Dave smiled upon hearing her response. To him, Kate had always been the rational and compliant one.
He gently clasped Kate's hand, his eyes brimming with affection and his tone mellowing.
"Our wedding is the day after tomorrow. The family has arranged a prenuptial health check. I'll definitely stay with you tomorrow."
His slightly narrowed eyes focused on Kate. She paused momentarily, a fleeting sadness crossing her gaze. She turned away and nodded silently.
The following day, Kate rose with Dave as usual. Early morning, she received a message from the cruise company.
"Your custom cruise will arrive in two days. You may begin preparing for embarkation."
Upon seeing the message, Kate's eyes flickered slightly.
"Honey, we need to get ready to leave!"
She swiftly turned off her phone. Looking up, she saw Dave holding a small bag filled with carefully prepared items. He shook it in front of her, seemingly seeking approval like a child.
Kate remained silent, offering only a faint, rueful smile.
