It appeared as though nothing really mattered anymore.
Kate remained quiet for an extended period before eventually speaking. "I've actually already pardoned you both..."
A long-absent smile appeared on David and Melanie's faces. Kate could sense it was genuine.
"However, I don't intend to return with you."
The smile on Melanie's face froze, and she seemed bewildered.
"How come? Are you still upset with us?"
Kate lifted her eyes to face them. "No, initially I was angry when I saw you, but not anymore. It's as if leaving helped me understand many things. In my youth, I couldn't comprehend why there was such a stark contrast between Leona and me, despite both being daughters. From age five, I began learning to be compliant and empathetic, striving to please you. Yet, no one can excuse my former childish self. I've forgiven you, but I can't pardon the version of me that was too lenient."
Upon hearing this, Melanie's eyes began to well up.
