I acted without thinking and fled.
"Daphne, this way!" Calix's voice crackled through the earpiece, followed by Blake's panicked calls.
But I couldn't take the risk. If I joined them in the car, the ruffians would pursue us, putting everyone in even greater jeopardy. I activated the earpiece and spoke hastily.
"I'll make my own way back. Have faith in me. I just need to mislead them."
"Daphne, reconsider!" Daniel's voice now, stern and authoritative.
I disregarded him, sprinting down the opposite road. The sound of my ragged breathing and rapid footsteps filled my ears, mingling with the yells of the gang in pursuit.
The maze-like alleys stretched before me, and I pushed myself harder, navigating through the cramped streets. My heart raced, but I persevered, knowing that slowing down meant defeat.
