I stood there, soaked in perspiration, gazing at the display as the hues unveiled themselves one after another. My fingers quivered, clenched into tight fists as if that could keep me composed. The initial three colors were a perfect match—crimson, emerald, sapphire.

Then the fourth appeared: lemon.

"It can't be," I murmured, shaking my head. I had selected tangerine. My heart raced. I leaned in, desperately hoping the screen would alter, that it was mistaken.

Mr. M's voice crackled through the audio system, icy and taunting. "And there you have it. So near, yet so distant. Tell me, Daphne, how does it feel to be responsible for your friend's demise?"

At first, his words didn't register. My eyes were fixated on the monitor showing Sue. The enclosure above her opened, and she yelled as she plummeted into the water below.

"Sue! No!" I cried out, pounding my fists on the surface.
