I faced my father, my hands shaking but my resolve firm. The moment I had long avoided had finally arrived.
"It's over, Dad," I declared, my voice unwavering despite my inner turmoil. "You've lost. I'm done with this."
Matthew's eyes flashed with anger as he stepped closer. "You think you've won? You're nothing but a turncoat. You should have stayed in your place. I should have eliminated you when I had the chance." His hand moved towards his coat pocket, where I knew his weapon was concealed.
But as he moved, a shout came from behind.
"Stop right there!"
I turned to see Daniel, Calix, Blake, and Chlyrus approaching like a unified force, their expressions determined. I hadn't realized they were nearby, but I knew one thing for certain: I was no longer alone.
Matthew's face twisted with shock. "You believe they can protect you, Daphne? You're feeble, just like your mother."
