Ryder's. POV
I groaned, stirring in the passenger seat. I had a splitting headache.
I pushed myself up, disoriented. I looked around, trying to remember what had happened. I flexed my hands, staring at them in wonder.
Strength flooded my movements, and color returned to my cheeks. The dying shadow was gone.
"Josh…" I breathed, my voice strong and clear. "I feel… alive." My laughter echoed a little bit.
I haven't felt this way in a while.
But then I looked at Joshua, my eyes wide with realization and dawning horror. "Kai! They have Kai! We have to go back home! Now!"
But Josh just kept driving, calm and peaceful. He glanced at me, smiling faintly. "Who's Kai?"
I froze, utterly still.
The color drained from my face as I stared at Josh.
My eyes searched his with a desperation that bordered on terror. I saw nothing there.
No recognition. No love. No pain. Just polite confusion and a strange, unsettling lightness.
