Daniil walked around the room, holding something inside his hand that Alek couldn't see. She watched him circle the room before he sat down on a large couch. Her brothers gently tugged her hand to lead her towards a large spread of food on a table in an adjoining room but she shook her head no.
Eriks imploringly looked to Daniil to get his support to move the little girl and their father just shrugged.
"It's all right, she can stay with me. You two go ahead and eat," Daniil replied with a gentle smile. Alek smiled brightly, as she sat delicately beside her father, adjusting her skirts to flow prettily around her.
Erik sighed and walked into the other room with Alexi. "We'll save you some sweets, Alek! Don't bother father too much while he's talking with Duke Volkov."
"I won't!" Alek called. She refocused her attention to the gem on Daniil's lapel with curiosity burning in her eyes. "Papa, how does that work?"
