Meeting a Viper

Matias exhaled slowly, choosing his words with care. "I think your daughter and I may have common interests. If she is studying curses, and the destruction of the Ulanovs was indeed by such means, she may be able to assist me in unraveling the truth. More than that, she may be in danger if she begins to dig too deeply. Whoever orchestrated the fall of Aleksasha's family will not take kindly to an inquisitive mind prying into their long-buried secrets."

Adan nodded, his sharp eyes caught the weight behind Matias's words. "You mean to keep an eye on Selene, then? To protect her?"

"To make her my ally," Matias firmly corrected the older man. "Selene has clearly taken a different path than most noblewomen, but that does not mean her skills and interests are without value. If she has a brilliant mind capable of grasping the inner workings of magic, she can see things I can't. You know how powerful such knowledge can be."
