News of a new threat reached the Vanguard of Avalon as they gathered in their temporary base. A rogue militia has seized control of a hydroelectric dam outside Manchester, threatening to destroy it and flood the surrounding areas unless their demands are met.
Arthur stood in the centre of the room, Excalibur resting in its scabbard at his side. His gaze swept over the team, his voice calm but firm. "This is more than a rescue mission. It is a test of our unity. We cannot let these people suffer because of our divisions."
Firebrand leaned against a wall, his flames flickering faintly. "Then let's not waste time with speeches. We go in, neutralise the militia, and save the day. Simple."
"It's not that simple," Lumina interjected, her glow brightening. "The dam is rigged with explosives. If we make one wrong move..."
"Then we'll do it right," Swift Angel said, his wings partially unfurled. "This isn't the time for hesitation."
Arthur raised a hand, silencing the growing tension. "We will succeed because we will work together. Each of us has a role to play. Let us not forget that we stand for something greater than ourselves."
The team moved swiftly, splitting into groups to approach the dam from multiple angles. Shadowleaf, Stormseer, and Shadowbane took to the shadows, using their abilities to disable external patrols and scout the area.
Yuri and Christopher created a distraction near the main gate, Yuri's ice forming barricades while Christopher twisted reality to confuse the militia's defences.
Arthur, Firebrand, Swift Angel, and Lumina approached the dam's control centre, where the militia leader was holed up with the detonator.
Firebrand's flames roared to life as he cleared a path through the militia's forces, his attacks precise yet devastating. Lumina followed, her healing light keeping the team steady amid the chaos.
"You're holding back," Lumina said as she caught up to Firebrand.
Firebrand didn't look at her. "Don't want to set the whole place on fire. That'd kind of ruin the rescue part."
"Progress," Lumina said with a small smile.
Meanwhile, Arthur and Angel worked in tandem, their contrasting styles complementing each other. Arthur's calculated strikes with Excalibur disarmed the enemy with precision, while Angel's aerial manoeuvres kept them off balance.
"They're retreating," Angel called out as the last of the militia fell back toward the control centre.
Arthur nodded. "Good. But the real challenge lies ahead."
The team reached the control room, where the militia leader—a grizzled man with a scarred face—stood behind a console, his hand hovering over the detonator.
"Stay back!" the man barked. "I'll do it! I swear I will!"
Arthur stepped forward, his tone steady and authoritative. "You don't have to do this. Surrender, and no harm will come to you."
The man sneered. "Surrender? To you? You think you're some kind of hero, but you're just another tyrant."
Firebrand's flames surged as he stepped beside Arthur. "He's giving you a chance. Don't make me take it away."
The leader's hand inched closer to the detonator, his expression wild with desperation. "I've got nothing to lose!"
Swift Angel swooped forward, his wings slicing through the air as he disarmed the man in a single, fluid motion. The detonator clattered to the floor, and Arthur quickly secured it with a single, precise strike from Excalibur.
As the team worked to defuse the explosives, the tension within the group began to surface once more.
Firebrand stood with his arms crossed, watching as Angel carefully dismantled the detonator. "You couldn't have waited a second longer, could you?"
Angel didn't look up. "He was about to blow the dam. Would you rather I let him?"
"We had it under control," Firebrand snapped.
"Enough," Arthur said, his voice cutting through the argument. "We succeeded because we worked together. Do not let pride diminish what we have achieved."
Firebrand muttered something under his breath but fell silent.
As the last of the explosives were disarmed, the team regrouped outside the dam, the tension beginning to ease.
"You did good," Lumina said quietly to Firebrand.
Firebrand glanced at her, his expression softening slightly. "Yeah, well... don't get used to it."
Angel approached Arthur, his wings folding tightly against his back. "Your plan worked. I'll admit, I didn't think it would."
Arthur smiled faintly. "It worked because we trusted one another. And because, despite our differences, we all want the same thing: a better world."
As the sun set over the dam, the team stood together, their unity still fragile but growing stronger.
Christopher broke the silence, his grin irreverent as always. "So, what's next? Save a cat from a tree? Stop an alien invasion? Start a roundtable club?"
Arthur chuckled, his gaze sweeping over the group. "Whatever comes next, we will face it together."
For the first time, Firebrand didn't argue.
