UNVEILING 2

Chapter Nineteen

Jason leaned against the closed door of Seline's room, the weight of his actions pressing heavily on his shoulders. His eyes closed for a moment, and he exhaled sharply, guilt washing over him like a tide he couldn't fight. He knew he had crossed a line, one that he couldn't easily come back from. But in his world, morality was a luxury he couldn't afford.

The sound of approaching footsteps pulled him from his thoughts. Jason opened his eyes to see Lucas, his trusted ally, standing before him.

Lucas's expression was a mix of concern and exasperation. "What the hell is wrong with you, Jason?" he asked, his voice low but firm. "Why are you acting like this with Seline? What's with all the hostility?"

Jason crossed his arms, his jaw tightening. "It's the fastest way to get her to comply," he replied flatly. His gaze remained fixed on the floor, unwilling to meet Lucas's probing eyes. "I don't have time for pleasantries."

Lucas studied him for a moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he shook his head. "You're playing a dangerous game, man," he said, his voice tinged with a warning. "What's the endgame here?"

Jason shrugged off the question, his posture shifting as if to physically shake off the tension. "How long do we have before we're found?" he asked, steering the conversation in another direction.

Lucas glanced at his watch. "Three days. Maybe less if Adam's men are as resourceful as they seem."

Jason nodded, the gears in his mind turning. "Fine. Keep an eye on the perimeter. And get some food for Seline."

Lucas frowned. "You think she'll eat after everything you've pulled?"

"She'll eat," Jason said, his tone clipped. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his arm card, tossing it to Lucas. "Use this. And stop asking questions."

As Lucas caught the card, he hesitated. "What's your plan, Jason?" he asked, his voice softer this time, almost cautious. "What are you really trying to do here?"

Jason smirked, the hint of a challenge glinting in his eyes. "You'll see," he said cryptically. Without another word, he pushed past Lucas and strode down the hallway, his footsteps echoing in the quiet.

Lucas watched him go, unease settling in the pit of his stomach. He had followed Jason through countless dangerous missions, but something about this felt different—darker. Whatever Jason's plan was, Lucas wasn't sure he wanted to be a part of it.

Inside the room, Seline sat on the chair, her hands still tied. The remnants of her fear from Jason's earlier outburst lingered in her mind, but now, defiance was beginning to take root. Her thoughts raced, trying to piece together an escape.

Jason's cold words replayed in her head: You'll stay here until I say so.

But Seline wasn't one to back down. Not this time.

As she began testing the strength of the ropes binding her, a single thought crystallized in her mind: I won't let him win.
