Chapter 5

"Livia, I've heard about your engagement. Shall we have dinner this evening?"

Laica sat across from me, her face lit up with a soft smile and eyes sparkling with happiness.

"You seem to care deeply for him, Laica," I remarked quietly, observing her closely.

She bobbed her head, her smile radiating pure joy. "Absolutely. Flynn and I go way back to childhood. During my time overseas these past few years, I longed for him so much it was almost unbearable."

I averted my gaze and sipped my coffee, trying to conceal the pain in my eyes.

"Truthfully, Livia, I'm at a loss for words to express my gratitude. You've been there for Flynn these three years, looking after him in my absence."

My hand shook slightly, nearly causing me to spill my drink. "Looking after him?"

I forced a wry smile. If enduring agony counted as care, then perhaps her statement held some truth.
