Chapter 6

The gale on the other side of the line roared loudly enough to mask his respiration.

"You uprooted your life and vanished just because of that individual?"

"What, simply because he's wealthy? My goodness, you truly are that shallow!"

"Listen, I understand you're upset, but if you return now, I can still offer you a marriage ceremony."

I gazed out at the celestial orb. Frigid and argentate.

"Indeed," I replied, my tone monotonous. "Because he's affluent. Infinitely superior to you."

I detected Gerard inhale sharply as if striving to contain his wrath from boiling over.

When he spoke again, his words were cutting.

"Ha! Is he even aware? That I've had you for seven years? That you've borne my offspring—thrice? If he discovers all that, do you believe he'll still desire you?" He sneered. "Yvaine, you'll eternally belong to me!"

A muted ache spread through my chest, and my throat constricted. My eyes began to water, and momentarily, I was rendered speechless.
