Evangeline wasn't exactly known for making wise decisions. That much was clear when she tiptoed out of the cottage.
She stepped outside the door and scene that unfolded before her stole whatever breath she had left.
Her eyes widened as five massive wolves stood at the edge of the clearing, their eyes growled angrily as they locked on Candor.
Her stomach dropped.
Before she could fully process the sight, the wolves began to shift. Bones cracked, fur receded, and within mere seconds, where the wolves had been, there now stood five men.
Five very naked men.
Evangeline's jaw dropped. Her face heated instantly, and she spun around, slapping a hand over her eyes… what the—
No. Nope. Absolutely not. This was not how she expected the day to go.
The image of their… masculine parts was now burned into her brain despite her best efforts.
She couldn't help but compare them to the ones she'd seen on her phone screen during particularly lonely nights— which was basically most nights— Real ones were much more… intimidating.
"You've got to be kidding me," she muttered under her breath, her hand still glued to her face.
"What are you doing here, vampire!" one of the men growled.
Curiosity got the best of her and she peeked through her fingers. The man who had spoken was tall and broad-shouldered, his long, dark hair fell past his shoulders, and his facial features were sharp and well defined.
That must be their Alpha, she guessed.
Her brain was screaming werewolves, and yet she couldn't fully wrap her head around the fact that they were real.
For a moment Evangeline wondered what her system even wanted with all these scepter artifacts, but if only those two gemstones were enough to send her back in time, she wondered what the full scepter could do—
"You're in our territory, bloodsucker," the man said, interrupting her train of thoughts, his voice was low and deadly.
Candor didn't even flinch. He stood there, tall and imposing as ever, his expression was cold and unbothered.
"Not anymore," he said simply. "It's mine now."
The wolves growled, their hands curling into fists at their sides.
Evangeline's heart raced as she took a small step back, her eyes darted between them.
Candor was severely outnumbered.
"Leave," he said with a sharp voice, filled with warning, "Before I make you."
"You have no claim here, vampire," the Alpha snarled. "Run back to your pretty palace."
Candor's gaze turned deadly. "You're no match for a vampire prince," he said, his tone held a hint of arrogance. "Go back to your dark little caves before I get bored and kill you."
The growls now turned into full-blown snarls, and then all hell broke loose.
The werewolves shifted back into their wolf forms, launching themselves at Candor with horrifying speed.
Evangeline stumbled back in fear as the fight began.
Candor moved like a machine built for battle. His sword glistened in the fading sunlight as he dodged and countered their attacks with fluid precision. His movements were so damn graceful, it was almost disrespectful.
One of them lunged for his throat, but Candor sidestepped, plunging his sword deep into its side. He didn't hesitate, didn't even blink, he leaned in and sank his fangs into the wolf's neck.
Evangeline's stomach churned as she watched him drain the creature of its blood, the sound of it both horrifying and disturbingly… intimate.
It was confirmed, Candor was a fucking vampire.
The next wolf went for his legs, but Candor kicked it back with enough force to send it flying into a tree. He was relentless, taking them down one by one, and each time, he fed from them, his movements growing sharper, and more violent, with each kill.
Evangeline could only watch, frozen in place, her heart pounded so hard she thought it might break through her chest.
She thought it was finally over when the last wolf turned to run. But then its glowing eyes locked on her.
Her blood ran cold.
The wolf charged at her, its claws were outstretched and its growl rattled her bones.
She screamed and folded herself into a ball, squeezing her eyes shut.
To her surprise, she felt no pain, instead she heard a yelp and then she collapsed to the ground in a heap, but Candor didn't stop. He drained that too.
Evangeline sharply rose to her feet and stumbled back, her hands were trembling as she tried to process what she'd just witnessed.
Candor's eyes traced her every movement like a predator, his golden hair stuck to his damp forehead.
And for a moment, she swore his eyes weren't blue anymore but a deep, unsettling crimson.
Her pulse quickened as a new fear took hold.
"Candor?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
He didn't respond. His fiery gaze trailed down to her neck and his jaw clenched tight, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
And then he shook his head sharply, like he was trying to clear a fog.
"You need to go," he said hoarsely, with a strained voice. "Now."
Evangeline blinked, no, she couldn't leave.
"What? Why?" she questioned.
"It's not safe for you here," he snapped, his tone was harsher now. "Especially not at night. Get back to your carriage and leave."
Evangeline frowned, her frustration rising. "I can't leave. I—"
Her brain scampered for an excuse, my system needs me to manipulate you and steal from you to level up… yeah that would work.
"Evangeline." Her name on his lips was like a growl... A very sexy one.
"Your blood—" His habds tangled into his hair. "Your blood smells too fucking good. Like angel blood."
Her heart stuttered, and a wave of heat rushed through her.
She was… feeling rather flattered.
He took a step back, like he was trying to put distance between them, but his eyes stayed locked on her, dark and hungry.
"Candor," she said softly, stepping toward him despite every instinct and nerve ending screaming at her to run.
"Stay back," he warned, his voice shaking slightly.
Instead of listening, she closed the distance between them. Her fingers were shaking as she reached out to rest a palm on his bloodied shirt.
His heart beat faintly underneath her skin.
"I'll gladly be your blood bank," she said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.
His sharp intake of breath was the only sound in the silence that followed. His eyes searched hers, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked like it might shatter.
His eyes suddenly darkened and then before she could even think about anything, he lounged at her.
