Rosalie, my fiancée and the CEO, informed me that the company was struggling financially and reduced my pay by 50%. However, I later stumbled upon an Instagram post from her assistant Tyler:
"The boss not only increased my salary but also gifted me an expensive vehicle out of concern for my work-related fatigue. She's incredibly considerate!"
The image showed him and my fiancée standing beside a newly acquired high-end car worth a million dollars, both appearing delighted.
After a brief moment of consideration, I clicked the like button.
Later that day, Rosalie called for an urgent staff meeting. Using the pretext that I was negatively impacting the company's environment, she withheld my entire monthly wages and allocated them to her assistant as compensation for emotional damages.
The other employees gazed at me with pity, expecting me to lose my composure and cause a commotion.
Instead, I calmly gathered my belongings from my workstation and presented my letter of resignation to her.
"Is withholding my pay not sufficient punishment for harassing a coworker? I'm resigning of my own accord."
As soon as I finished speaking, Rosalie's assistant Tyler quickly interjected.
"Felix, how can you quit over such a trivial issue? You've been with the company for ages, and Rosalie has always treated you well. If you leave at this crucial time, what will happen to Rosalie? Rosalie, please try to change Felix's mind!"
Rosalie might have considered persuading me earlier. But after hearing Tyler's words, her irritation intensified. She scoffed: "Why should I try to convince him? If he wants to leave, so be it. I have nothing to conceal, I'm not concerned about what anyone might say."
Then, without hesitation, she signed my resignation letter and tossed it at me.
The observing colleagues were astounded.
A coworker who was close to me quietly urged me to apologize and not act rashly.
Nearly everyone present was aware that I had assisted Rosalie in building this company from the ground up. When funds were tight, I worked tirelessly to secure investments. When projects faced deadlines, I led the team in working overtime to complete them. I had invested countless hours and emotional energy into every aspect of the business.
Now that the company had secured funding and was on the verge of going public, it seemed illogical for anyone to depart at this juncture.
But I maintained my composure, picking up the resignation letter from the floor.
"I'll depart after completing the handover of my responsibilities."
"No need for a handover, just leave now," Rosalie stated coldly, gesturing towards the exit.
Seeing this, I said nothing more. After bidding farewell to a few individuals, I collected my things and left.
Before departing, I glanced back at Rosalie one final time. I distinctly noticed a flicker of mixed emotions in her outwardly cold and composed eyes.
Naturally, I understood why. She hadn't expected me to leave. We had disagreed before, but after brief absences, I would always return apologetic and resume work as usual.
But perhaps she was unaware that this time differed from previous instances. My patience with her had finally reached its limit.
I walked to the parking area. I located my old vehicle that I had been driving for a decade, with several areas of paint worn away.
Adjacent to it was parked a brand-new top-tier Porsche, the one Rosalie had just given to Tyler that day.
Despite numerous vacant spots in the garage, he chose to park right there. I comprehended. This was his method of mocking me.
These weren't merely two automobiles; they symbolized the two of us. I had been with Rosalie for ten years, yet I wasn't as valued as Tyler who had only joined ten months prior.
I laughed at myself sardonically and entered my car.
Just then, I received a text message. Upon opening it, I saw a transfer from my friend.
That morning when Rosalie mentioned the company's financial struggles and proposed reducing my salary, I worried she was under excessive stress. I immediately contacted a friend and borrowed fifty thousand dollars.
I had initially planned to give it to her, but then I inadvertently saw Tyler's Instagram post about Rosalie purchasing him a new car.
At that moment, I was surprisingly composed, feeling neither despondent nor consumed by jealousy.
Perhaps it was because such incidents had occurred too frequently.
Tyler had been recruited into the company by Rosalie as an exception. His work competence was severely lacking, but Rosalie, who had always been meticulous and serious about work, could repeatedly tolerate his mistakes.
From minor issues like serving plain water to clients during meetings while getting milk tea for herself, to major errors like sending the minimum price list to partners instead of the quote list, causing the company to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars.
When I raised concerns about Tyler's performance, Rosalie would unhesitatingly defend him.
She would regard me with impatience.
"Tyler is a recent graduate, isn't it normal for him to make some mistakes? Why are you being so critical of a newcomer?"
