For the first time, Lucas appeared genuinely disheveled, his forehead creased and his mouth drawn into a tight line.
I scoffed, "I meant what I said downstairs about ending our relationship.
"It's not because you rushed to rescue someone else first or due to your involvement with another woman."
I purposefully looked at Isabella's face before adding, "It's because you lack understanding of what love truly is."
Staying in a relationship without hope was my final act of devotion. Now, I'm not giving up on Lucas, but rather choosing to set myself free.
Whispers emerged from the onlookers, "Is she really this strong-willed?"
"She's just putting on an act. She'll regret it when Lucas actually leaves her."
I remained unmoved.
A flicker of bewilderment crossed Lucas's typically stern expression.
To others, Lucas seemed the ideal boyfriend--accomplished, thoughtful on special occasions, polite to others, and emotionally stable.
However, faced with my outburst, he appeared caught off guard, completely unaware of his own shortcomings.
Holding back my irritation, I spoke.
"During these three years, have you ever genuinely tried to comprehend me or make any concessions for me?
"You're aware I adore white lisianthus, but do you know I have a fondness for sweets?"
I refrained from eating sugary treats around him because he found them messy. He'd frown whenever he saw someone eating them at home.
"Have you ever paid attention to my words?
"Did you ever desire to share your life experiences with me?
"Have you ever introduced me to others without prompting?
"Did you ever take a moment to explain situations from my point of view?"
Realizing I was revealing too much, I clenched my teeth and turned to depart.
But he grasped my hand once more.
Lucas spoke in a low voice. "If we have problems, you could tell me. We could address them calmly."
I felt drained. "All our disagreements have centered around these issues."
His eyes showed a hint of redness.
I pulled my hand away without emotion.
Someone from the group attempted to mediate. "Lucas, take it easy. She's just upset right now. Once she calms down, everything will be fine."
I exited the bar, my departure captured on video by someone in the crowd.
A few days later, my friends informed me that the video of our argument had circulated, and no one could believe I would end things with Lucas. They were even wagering on how soon I'd return to reconcile.
I smiled faintly and remained silent.
I had been working late on a project these days and had no time for anything else.
At last, the project was completed.
My boss patted my shoulder and said, "Your bonus is doubled, and a promotion is on the horizon. Take some time to rest now."
