Luke stared at me, astonished.
I put my signature on the surgical consent document.
How could someone so cruel and negligent to an infant of just six months be fit to be a father?
Since his employment at Nancy's firm began, I hadn't received any of his earnings.
Instead, his spending increased and was all covered by my funds.
I never questioned him about it.
I believed that loving him meant trusting him completely.
But now I wondered if his expenditures involved hiding assets.
The divorce proceedings dragged on.
During this period, besides preparing legal paperwork, I also had to search for proof of him moving our shared resources.
However, I was caught off guard when Luke's parents boldly showed up at my workplace.
"Ms. Lane, you have visitors waiting outside."
As I exited my office, I was struck across the face.
"You ungrateful wretch! My son underwent fertility treatments for you and worked tirelessly to help you conceive, but you lost the baby! Have you no compassion?"
Luke's mother, Stella, approached me with fury in her eyes and struck me, while my coworkers looked on mockingly.
"That was a child!"
"She's worthless! Can't even carry a baby! What kind of woman is she? She should just die rather than prevent my son from finding someone better!" Luke's father, Charles, standing nearby, spewed even more hurtful words.
"You despicable creature, you even had your womb removed without informing my son. You're so heartless!
"If my son can't have children, I'll make sure you suffer greatly."
I had always treated my in-laws well throughout my marriage.
During celebrations and special events, I showed them hospitality, serving them fine food and drinks. I even allowed them to decide where the baby would live after birth.
After all, I truly loved my husband and didn't mind who I lived with.
But not a single truthful word came from his mouth.
If they knew it was their own son who had struck me, causing the miscarriage, and that I needed a hysterectomy due to his violent actions, would they still side with him?
They wouldn't.
They would only blame me for not saving my uterus and my child's life.
Greedy individuals always desire more.
"Don't worry, I've already filed for divorce.
"I'll give you the freedom you fought for Luke."
Everyone thought I couldn't survive without Luke, and they all used this to intimidate me.
But I no longer cared.
Charles was visibly shocked, but quickly regained his composure. "Hmph, we'll see how long you can keep up this act!
"Don't come crying to us later."
