"Money! I want so much money I could spend ten lifetimes—" Kuroki stopped himself. What was he doing? He was standing before a wish-granting machine! Why ask for money when there were so many better options?
"I want… immortality!"
...
Silence.
This time, there was no immediate reaction.
"...W-what's wrong?" Kuroki clenched his fists. "Grant my wish!"
"Immortality..." The voice, now laced with amusement, echoed closer.
"There are many forms of immortality."
Bang!!!
The prison door bulged as if struck by a powerful force.
"Stones are immortal, shall I turn you into one? Devils are immortal; should I turn you into one?"
Bang!!!
The door's deformation was even more intense. The hinges were broken.
He could tell the voice was now right behind the door.
"W-wait! I don't want to be a stone!"
Terror forced Kuroki to speak. "Take it back! I wish for something else—!"
"Ah, no need to worry about that. Before your second wish, you must pay the price for your first."
Bang!
The door was ripped off its frame. Flying past him, it took Kuroki's arm.
"Aaaaaaaah!!!"
"Hush, you're too loud." Shoko stepped into the blood, reaching Kuroki.
"Getting hurt so easily is disrespectful to those you killed."
"Dizziness is normal, but you won't die—yet." The voice was almost gentle, but lacked compassion. "Not until you pay the price."
What does she mean…?
His terror grew as his remaining hand began to vanish, fading like an erased drawing.
His limbs, face…
"W-wh…" His mouth disappeared before he could finish.
"Immortality for the price of free will? Seems worthless." Shoko shuddered at the sight of the human-shaped thing on the ground.
She'd never witnessed a wish go so horribly wrong. His desire was less important than the price.
But she wasn't responsible. She was a free wish-granting service for over a year, and this was the first time anyone paid the cost. She was practically a saint!
She created new clothes and glanced at the prison cell she'd been in for a year, shrugged, and walked towards the exit.
One year. The main story is starting, and I'm finally free.
After a while, Public Safety had approached her again. They couldn't keep her locked up forever. They needed her to take on the costs of the Devil Contracts, like with Aki.
But she could refuse. She was only a power source. She forced them to sign a contract: She'd help Public Safety's Devil Hunters, but if anyone used her for personal wishes, she could leave. The officers wouldn't capture her again.
She was betting that somebody would use a wish selfishly.
The Public Safety members were confident in their organization. Shoko was confident in human nature.
She also had the system store. She could manipulate anyone. Make them want something they shouldn't.
She was almost ready when some idiot helped her out.
The contract was over. Shoko had won. The cell door had exploded, a Devil construct.
How did that average person infiltrate a maximum-security prison?
Someone else is behind this.
Public Safety would never be that lax.
If it wasn't a human, then…
She stepped onto the elevator and prepared for the inevitable.
She reached the top and saw the familiar figure standing in the sunlight.
"Hello, Makima."
