The First Bloom 37

Morning came, but Jianyu wasn't really there.

Physically, sure, he was sitting at the usual breakfast table, eating his usual portion of whatever Chengxin had made. But mentally? He might as well have been on a different planet.

Qi Qi noticed it immediately.

She plopped down next to him, dramatic as always, resting her chin on her hands. "Jianyu ge," she sang, stretching the nickname out like she was calling a pet. No response.

Her eyes narrowed. "Jianyu ge."

Chengxin, who had been quietly sipping his tea, gave her a questioning look.

"He's broken," Qi Qi announced, straight-faced.

Chengxin blinked. "Broken?"

She nodded, very serious, then without hesitation, reached over and poked Jianyu's cheek.

Jianyu finally looked up, giving her a slow, exhausted blink.

"What."

Qi Qi gasped, looking deeply offended. "No snarky comeback? No 'Qi Qi, I swear to god'? Not even a sigh of suffering?"
