Chapter 10
The group emerged from the mist to find themselves standing at the edge of a serene lake. The water mirrored the stars above, creating the illusion of an endless sky stretching beneath their feet. Floating on the surface were dozens of glowing lanterns, each emitting a warm, golden light.
"What is this place?" Meera whispered, her voice filled with awe.
"It's beautiful," Riya said, stepping closer to the water. The lanterns cast soft reflections on her face, making her eyes sparkle.
Aaravi knelt by the edge of the lake, dipping her fingers into the cool water. "It feels... calm," she said. "But I don't think this is just a pretty view. There's something more to it."
On the shore, they noticed a small, intricately carved pedestal. On it lay four lanterns, unlit and unadorned. A soft, melodic voice echoed around them, much like the one they had heard in the Garden of Echoes.
"Light your lanterns with the flame of trust. Only then will the path ahead reveal itself."
The Challenge of Trust
The group exchanged wary glances.
"Flame of trust?" Riya said, raising an eyebrow. "What does that even mean? Are we supposed to, like, trust the lanterns to light themselves?"
"Probably not," Isha said dryly. "This place has been throwing riddles at us from the start. I'm guessing it wants us to do some soul-searching again."
Meera picked up one of the lanterns, inspecting it closely. "Maybe it's about trusting each other," she said thoughtfully. "We've been through a lot already, but this could be a way of testing how much we really believe in one another."
Aaravi nodded. "If that's the case, then we need to be honest—not just with ourselves, but with each other."
As they each took a lantern, the soft glow of the lake seemed to dim slightly, as if the world itself was holding its breath.
Illuminating the Lanterns
One by one, the group began to speak, each sharing something vulnerable, a truth they had kept hidden until now.
Riya's Turn
"I... I've always used humor to keep people at a distance," Riya admitted, her voice unusually quiet. "It's easier to make people laugh than to let them see the real me. But you guys... you make me feel like it's okay to let my guard down."
As she spoke, her lantern flickered to life, a small flame glowing steadily inside.
Isha's Turn
"I've been so afraid of showing weakness," Isha said, gripping her lantern tightly. "But being with all of you has taught me that leaning on others doesn't make me weak. It makes me stronger."
Her lantern lit up, its flame steady and warm.
Meera's Turn
"I've always thought I had to figure everything out on my own," Meera said, her voice trembling slightly. "But you've shown me that it's okay to ask for help. Trusting you has been one of the hardest—and best—things I've ever done."
Her lantern ignited, casting a soft glow around her.
Aaravi's Turn
"I've always felt like I had to be the one holding everything together," Aaravi said, her voice steady but emotional. "But being with you has reminded me that I don't have to do it alone. Trusting you isn't just a choice—it's something I'm grateful for every day."
Her lantern lit up, completing the circle of light.
The Lanterns' Glow
As all four lanterns glowed brightly, the lake began to shimmer, and the floating lanterns rose into the air, forming a path of light across the water.
"Looks like we passed," Riya said, her tone light but her smile genuine.
"I think it's more than just passing," Meera said. "It's about realizing how much we need each other—and how much stronger we are together."
Aaravi held her lantern high, stepping onto the path of floating lights. The others followed, their lanterns illuminating the way.
As they walked across the water, the path shifted and shimmered, the lanterns responding to their movement. Each step felt lighter, as though the burden of their doubts had been left behind.
The Voice's Message
As they reached the other side of the lake, the melodic voice returned, gentle yet resonant.
"Trust is the foundation of all bonds. To trust another is to show strength, not weakness. It is in the light of trust that true paths are revealed."
The group stood in silence, the weight of the words sinking in.
"Okay," Riya said after a moment. "Can we all agree that this voice has a knack for making us feel things?"
"Agreed," Isha said with a rare grin. "But I think it's right. Trusting each other got us this far. And it'll get us through whatever comes next."
"Here's to trusting the process," Meera said with a small smile.
"And each other," Aaravi added, her lantern glowing brighter in her hands.
The group walked forward, their lanterns lighting the way, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
