Chapter 32: The Gravity "Prenatal Training" Method

The weather was perfect, with sunlight streaming down.

Days had passed since Paul left Oreburgh City, heading toward the location of his next gym challenge.

The two closest Gyms to Oreburgh were the Grass-type Gym in Eterna City and the Steel-type Gym in Canalave City.

Paul planned to challenge the Pastoria City Gym after these, then take a ferry directly to Canalave City for his next gym battle. Along the way, he could also visit the renowned Iron Island to train, before taking another ferry to a town near Snowpoint City to prepare for the gym there.

This route was chosen with careful consideration. By the time he reached Pastoria Gym, he should have either a Water-type or Flying-type Pokémon, ensuring he could handle any unforeseen circumstances.

At this moment, on an open field, Paul sat cross-legged in meditation. Nearby, a Pokémon egg rested inside an incubator, while Blissey continued its role as team medic, assisting Pokémon training with a gravity device.

Within the gravity field, Gible was locked in an intense battle with its big bro, Elekid, seeking to grow stronger through combat.

Ursaring, unusually, was not participating in the battle. Instead, it stood at the edge of the field, holding a fiery red Flame Orb in one paw while repeatedly practicing its Fire Punch with the other.

Ursaring was undergoing a rather unique training regimen.

It is well-known that when Pokémon use moves, unless they have inherent drawbacks, they typically expend energy without harming themselves. For instance, a dual Rock- and Bug-type Pokémon like Armaldo can use Aqua Jet without being harmed by its own water. Similarly, in the movie, the Red Genesect's self-generated flames from Flame Charge caused it no harm.

Paul, however, was doing the opposite—training Ursaring to injure itself with its own Fire Punch. Through persistent effort, Ursaring aimed to intentionally burn itself, thus activating its Guts ability.

Though the concept sounded simple, execution was anything but, to harm itself with Fire Punch, Ursaring first needed immense power behind the move and precise control over its energy. Only by mastering both it could cause self-inflicted burns.

Currently, Ursaring was struggling with both aspects.

Fortunately, it had the Flame Orb provided by Paul.

With the Flame Orb's power as a guide, Ursaring could significantly improve both its Fire Punch's strength and its control over fire.

At this pace, success was only a matter of time.

Time passed as the Pokémon trained. Just as Paul was about to open his eyes and move on to the next training target, he felt a faint, peculiar wave of energy nearby.

The wave was weak and monotone, like the exploratory pulse of a newborn entity, accidentally brushing against Paul before fading away.

Paul focused, attempting to sense it more clearly. But before he could delve deeper, the wave disappeared, leaving calm in its wake.

"A faint pulse..."

Opening his eyes, Paul glanced around and finally directed his gaze to the Pokémon egg resting silently in the incubator beside him.

Retrieving the egg from the incubator, he concentrated, trying to sense its interior.

Thump... Thump...

A barely audible heartbeat emerged from within the egg, signaling the formation of a new life. Its unique pulse and aura had begun to change subtly.

"A Pokémon sensitive to energy and psychic waves? Could it be a Psychic-type?"

In the Kanto region, several species were known for their psychic abilities—Abra, Exeggcute, Psyduck... However, just from this faint impression, Paul couldn't determine what Pokémon was inside the egg.

"If it's a Psychic-type Pokémon, it might have the potential to learn the move Gravity."

Unlike the games, reality wasn't bound by rigid mechanics or data constraints. With effort and innate talent, many Pokémon could learn moves that might seem impossible in theory.

For example, even non-starter Pokémon could master moves like Blast Burn or Frenzy Plant under the right circumstances. Similarly, a Psychic-type Pokémon might not only heal with its abilities but also learn Gravity with enough training.

Blissey, while reliable, wasn't Paul's own Pokémon and couldn't stay with him indefinitely. Its use of Gravity was consistent but limited in intensity.

If Paul could raise a Pokémon with a strong Psychic aptitude to learn Gravity, he could create a personal gravity training device without relying on Blissey.

And if a Pokémon were hatched under heightened gravity conditions, would it emerge stronger or more talented than usual?

With this thought, Paul instinctively turned his gaze to Blissey, who was currently maintaining the gravity field. Without hesitation, he picked up the egg and approached it.

"Blissey." Paul instructed, "Reduce the gravity to the lightest setting, just enough to notice a difference."

"Blissey!"

Blissey, assuming Paul wanted the other Pokémon to relax, chirped cheerfully and adjusted the gravity.

To its surprise, Paul stepped into the gravity field with the egg, sat down, and closed his eyes to focus on the life inside.

"Blissey?"

Blissey tilted its head in confusion, unsure of what Paul was doing.

Pokémon eggs and their inhabitants are known for their resilience. For example, the Larvitar egg Ash bonded with in the anime endured countless hardships but survived, showcasing their incredible vitality.

Thus, Blissey wasn't overly concerned about the egg's safety under mild gravity.

Paul's goal was simple: expose the developing Pokémon to gravity changes and provide a unique form of "prenatal training."

As long as the gravity remained stable and Blissey provided healing support, the egg's safety was guaranteed.

Paul wasn't a true Psychic-type user, but as a traveler with strong mental fortitude and a fighter trained in yoga, he had a keen sense for energy, mental strength, and aura.

Even if he couldn't wield these forces, he could perceive them with precision.

"Use Heal Pulse for a while, then slightly increase the gravity." Paul instructed.

"Blissey!"

After some observation, Blissey understood Paul's intent and carefully followed his instructions.

Heal Pulse stabilized the egg's life force, while increased gravity strengthened its resilience.

"Heal Pulse. Gravity increase."

"Blissey!"

"Heal Pulse. A bit stronger."

"Blissey!"

And so, this peculiar form of prenatal training continued.

The sight of Paul sitting in meditation with the egg in his arms was bizarre, to say the least.

By now, the wider gravity field had dissipated, leaving only a localized zone around Blissey.

Nearby, Gible and Elekid, both battered from their training, paused to observe.

"What's going on?" Gible blinked, looking to Elekid for answers.

"They're obviously hatching the egg." Elekid replied confidently.

"Really?"

"Of course. Why else would they be holding an egg? Playing with it?"

"You're so smart, big bro!"

Elekid puffed up with pride.
