Chapter 43: Growth Training Method - Moves and Nurturing

"Vulpix, use Sunny Day."

Watching three Pokémon head off to train, Paul turned to Vulpix and gave the command.

"Vul~!"

Vulpix glowed brightly, its inner power resonating with the surrounding environment. Within seconds, the sun above seemed to blaze even hotter, saturating the air with solar energy.

With this, fire-type moves would gain a power boost, while water-type moves would be suppressed. Additionally, moves related to sunlight such as Growth, would see enhanced effects under these conditions.

"Perfect. Now let's try out an idea. Turtwig, listen carefully and take your time. Vulpix, observe closely."

"Twiig!"

"Vul!"

Both Turtwig and Vulpix nodded attentively, focusing on Paul's instructions.

"Turtwig, feel the solar energy—the same energy you absorb when using Solar Beam."

"Slowly try to store that solar energy using the method from Synthesis, converting it into nutrients. However, do not use the nutrients to recover stamina."

Paul paused after explaining, observing Turtwig's actions while quietly instructing Blissey. "Keep an eye on Turtwig. If anything goes wrong, be ready to use your healing moves immediately."

Although Paul's method was unlikely to cause harm, he didn't want to take any risks. With Blissey here before sending back, Paul felt confident enough to experiment.

"Bliss~"

Blissey fixed its gaze on Turtwig.

Unlike the tension and focus of the surrounding Pokémon, Turtwig appeared relaxed. Its time spent adventuring had made it highly proficient with its moves, particularly Synthesis.

Whether it was for healing or gathering nutrients from sunlight to "fill its stomach," Turtwig had always found Synthesis to be incredibly useful.

From Paul's explanation, this seemed no different from its usual use of Synthesis. It followed the familiar steps, absorbing sunlight and converting it into nutrients. Within moments, Turtwig "felt full" and raised its head, gazing at Paul with its large, innocent eyes.

"The final step: use Growth. This time, try to use the nutrients and energy for growth, but avoid tapping into your stamina."

"Don't focus on the short-term stat boost from Growth. Instead, channel the move to absorb the nutrients and energy into every part of your body, enabling permanent growth—just like how plants naturally grow."

Paul's idea was simple: absorb energy, create nutrients, and use Growth to consume the nutrients for rapid development, thereby enhancing Turtwig's physical capabilities.

Essentially, this was the grass-type equivalent of "Meditate," though instead of boosting only mental strength, it aimed for comprehensive improvement.

However, Paul knew that because this method provides all-around enhancement, it wouldn't produce dramatic results in the short term. The process was slow and steady, allowing the Pokémon to grow stronger even while resting.

Once Turtwig mastered this Growth training method, it could continue improving outside of battles, even during downtime.

"Turtwig!"

After hearing Paul's explanation, Turtwig fell into deep thought. It often used Growth and Synthesis, but it had never considered using Growth to enhance its physical body before.

A few moments later, Turtwig closed its eyes, carefully channeling its energy to promote growth. To avoid injury, it proceeded cautiously.

As a grass-type Pokémon, Turtwig's body inherently had plant-like traits. Using the sprout on its head as a reference, it began applying the Growth method throughout its entire body.

Three minutes later, Turtwig opened its eyes, a gleam of joy visible within them—it had succeeded!

"Repeat the process and establish a cycle. Gradually grow your body over time. This is the Growth Training Method I developed." Paul explained. "Once you've mastered this, you can add Ingrain to the mix, combining it with Synthesis and Growth for even better results."

The core of the Growth Training Method lay in two moves—Synthesis and Growth—both of which were common among grass-types. Sunny Day enhanced the training effect, while Solar Beam facilitated easier mastery.

An alternative version of the method involved replacing Synthesis with Ingrain to draw nutrients from the ground. In theory, combining Ingrain and Growth could achieve the same results even without Synthesis. However, mastering all three moves would yield the best outcome.

"In the future, when you fully master this method, you can perform the entire process simultaneously at any time. As long as there's sunlight and earth, you'll continue growing stronger."

"With the assistance of Sunny Day, you might achieve in one session what others would need half a day of intense training to accomplish just by basking in the sun."

After hearing Paul's detailed explanation, Turtwig's eyes sparkled with admiration. Who wouldn't want a method to grow stronger while lying down?

Certainly not Turtwig.

"Turtwig!"

Fired up by Paul's depiction of the method, Turtwig eagerly prepared to begin training, determined to master it as quickly as possible.

"Take your time during training. Since no one has tried this method before, proceed slowly to avoid injury."

"But with Blissey here, once you're familiar with the process, you can push yourself to test your limits."

"Turtwig!"

"Bliss~"

Both Turtwig and Blissey nodded, ready to follow Paul's instructions.

Satisfied, Paul turned his attention to Vulpix. "Did you notice anything from observing Turtwig?"

"Vul!"

Vulpix shook its head decisively—it had no idea what it had just witnessed.

Growth, Synthesis, or Ingrain—it couldn't learn any of those moves.

"Did you observe how Turtwig absorbed solar energy?"

"Vul~"

Vulpix nodded. It had noticed something—it could sense and absorb solar energy too, though it was difficult. Once absorbed, its fire energy seemed to grow slightly more potent, but it didn't feel anything else.

"Good. Do you remember Turtwig's Solar Beam during its battle with Gible?"

"Vul~"

Vulpix nodded again, vividly recalling the move that had sent Gible flying. However, it was a grass-type move. Could a fire-type like it learn such a thing?

Paul explained, "That move works by absorbing sunlight and solar energy to unleash an attack. Start by sensing sunlight and solar energy, then try to absorb it. If you get stuck, ask Turtwig for guidance."

"Once you're able to absorb enough energy, gather it together and try to shoot it out like a jet of flame. At that time, you will be able to learn the solar beam."

"Turtwig!"

Eager to help, Turtwig paused its training to teach Vulpix about Solar Beam. Blissey occasionally chimed in with additional insights.

"Vul~"

Listening to their guidance, Vulpix began to grasp the concept.

Reality wasn't a game, and conversely, games weren't reality. In the real world, Pokémon could learn moves not available to them in games, though the reverse was also true. Some game moves were exceedingly rare or difficult to learn in reality.

For instance, could fire-types learn Solar Beam or Grass Knot?

Most trainers would scoff at the idea, deeming it impossible. Grass Knot, in particular, was rare even among grass-types.

However, Paul had seen fire-types learn Solar Beam before, albeit with great difficulty.

Paul didn't expect Vulpix to master Solar Beam quickly. He believed that with a clear goal and proper guidance, it would succeed eventually.

As Paul observed his Pokémon training diligently, his expression remained neutral, but he couldn't help feeling pleased.

With his Pokémon busy training, Paul turned his attention to the three practicing their moves. After providing some guidance, he instructed Blissey and Vulpix to occasionally cast Gravity on the training Pokémon before settling down with a book and notebook.

Over the years since his reincarnation, Paul had not only trained and studied but also collaborated with his brother Reggie on developing and researching Pokémon nurturing methods.

In addition to his Gravity Incubation Method for Pokémon Eggs and the Growth Training Method, Paul had previously proposed ideas such as Steam Therapy, Massage Nurturing, Acupressure Techniques, and modernized nurturing practices.

Some methods had been successfully developed and implemented, while others remained under research and improvement, awaiting for eventual success.
