"Got it, Dusknoir! Use Payback!"
Payback—a Dark-type move that doubles power if the user is attacked first. This strategy allowed the burned Dusknoir to unleash its full strength.
Grasping the final moments of Trick Room, Dusknoir darted through the blazing firestorm, ignoring the flames and landed a heavy punch squarely on Magmar's jaw, forcing it to clamp its mouth shut and halt its fiery assault.
"Now, Confuse Ray!"
A mysterious light radiated from Dusknoir, shining onto Magmar and causing it to sway unsteadily.
Confusion!
"Magmar, use Fire Blast!" Lucas commanded.
Despite its muddled state, Magmar saw Dusknoir momentarily appear as its trainer, Paul, and reflexively unleashed the devastating attack.
"Dodge it—wait, no, don't dodge..." Conway began to shout, but then changed his mind upon noticing the flickering of Trick Room.
Sure enough, in the next instant, Trick Room shattered into pieces as its time expired, drastically reducing Dusknoir's speed and leaving it no chance to evade the oncoming Fire Blast. Instead, Dusknoir spread its arms wide and braced for impact.
Lucas' expression shifted as he realized the danger, but it was too late. The Fire Blast struck true, detonating in a fiery explosion.
BOOM!
The massive blast echoed through the battlefield, engulfing Dusknoir in a cloud of smoke and debris. When the dust settled, Dusknoir lay motionless on the ground, fainted.
"Yes! One down!" Barry cheered.
Lucas, however, remained silent, his unease growing as he watched Conway's calm smile and the fainted Dusknoir. His foreboding was soon confirmed.
In the next moment, a surge of purple energy emanated from Dusknoir's eyes, shooting straight into the confused Magmar.
Thud!
Magmar let out a startled cry before collapsing, its eyes swirling in a daze.
"Wha—what just happened?" Barry froze in shock.
Conway adjusted his glasses, his expression unreadable. "Destiny Bond."
The realization hit Barry like a thunderbolt. "That move! I saw it yesterday! It takes down the opponent with it! So Magmar... defeated itself?"
"Sigh... I knew it." Lucas exhaled deeply and recalled Magmar to its Poké Ball. "You did great, Magmar. Rest now."
"Dusknoir, excellent work. Return now." Conway also withdrew Dusknoir before turning to Paul. "Your turn."
Paul gave no reply, issuing his next command instead.
"Turtwig, break through with Razor Slash and Magical Leaf! Attack!"
With Magmar defeated, the blazing inferno on the field began to subside. Though Turtwig bore burn marks and injuries, it stood resolute, determined to press on.
"Twig!"
Having used Growth four times during the battle, Turtwig's body surged with energy. It glared at Staravia, who had relentlessly targeted it throughout the match. A barrage of Magical Leaf tore through the air, shattering Air Slash and striking Staravia directly.
"Staravia, use Steel Wing!" Barry yelled.
The energy within the quadruple-boosted Magical Leaf was overwhelming, and Staravia, already fatigued, struggled to evade or deflect the attack. Instead, it braced itself for a desperate counterstrike.
Clang!
Staravia's metallic wings collided with the leaves, breaking some apart, but the remaining projectiles knocked it to the ground.
By all accounts, Staravia's remaining strength should not have been enough to continue the battle. Yet Paul's next command rang out.
"Ingrain!"
"Twig!"
Obeying its trainer, Turtwig rooted itself into the ground, drawing upon the earth's nutrients and sunlight to recover its strength.
"Staravia, no!" The referee prepared to declare Staravia unable to battle, but to everyone's surprise, the bird Pokémon pushed itself up with its wings, refusing to give in.
Staravia, having endured relentless pressure throughout the match, summoned every ounce of willpower to rise again. It cried out with determination, igniting a powerful resonance with its trainer.
"You're amazing, Staravia! You're the best!" Barry shouted with pride.
"Starrr!"
With a loud cry, the Staravia resonating with its Trainer began to emit a dazzling white light—it was evolving.
"Evolving?"
"It's evolving?"
Barry and Conway froze in shock, their expressions revealing a mix of astonishment and disbelief.
At this critical moment in their battle, such an event was entirely unexpected!
"Turtwig!"
On the other side, Turtwig remained surprisingly calm in the face of this transformation.
A faint green light radiated from its body as it used its roots to activate Mega Drain, rapidly absorbing energy and nutrients from the earth. At the same time, the tiny sprout on its head eagerly soaked in sunlight, drawing solar energy to produce nutrients.
However, in this moment, everyone except Paul had their eyes fixed on the glowing Staravia, witnessing the rare sight of evolution unfold.
"Staraptor!"
At last, the brilliant light faded, revealing the evolved form—Staraptor.
Compared to its previous form, Staraptor was significantly larger and more robust. Its gaze had grown sharper and more determined, with its talons and beak now exuding a formidable, razor-sharp edge.
The most striking feature, however, was the crest on its head, which now stood like a crown. The red tip seemed to signify the power contained within Staraptor.
With the evolution complete, many of Staraptor's injuries had healed, enough to allow it to unleash powerful attacks.
"Turtwig!"
Turtwig stared at the newly evolved Staraptor, its eyes blazing with determination. It let out a spirited cry to fire itself up, and at that moment, its body also began to glow with a radiant white light.
"What?! Another evolution?!"
"This is incredible!"
"A double evolution in a single battle? Rare, truly rare!"
"..."
The spectators, initially content to witness one Pokémon evolve, now found themselves overwhelmed with excitement as a second evolution unfolded before their eyes.
Within the white glow, the once-small Turtwig began to grow rapidly, its body expanding and becoming sturdier with each passing moment. In the blink of an eye, its height surpassed one meter, and yet it showed no signs of stopping.
Suddenly, the sunlight grew noticeably more intense, and the concentrated solar energy transformed into golden light, merging with the radiance surrounding Turtwig.
The roots embedded in the ground thickened and spread outward, extending in all directions. Some even broke through the surface, protruding visibly above the ground.
At the same time, countless roots emitted a vibrant green glow as Turtwig, still in the midst of evolution, continued to use Mega Drain, absorbing endless energy and nutrients from the earth.
Fueled by the combination of solar energy and terrestrial energy, Turtwig's body continued to grow taller and larger. Although the speed slowed slightly, it did not stop. Within seconds, it had already surpassed the average height of a Grotle at 1.1 meters.
1.2 meters... 1.3 meters... 1.4 meters... 1.5 meters!
It wasn't until Turtwig reached a height of 1.5 meters that its growth finally ceased, shifting focus instead to reshaping its new form.
"Grrr!"
The long evolution process finally came to an end as the white light dispersed, revealing the newly transformed Grotle.
The shell, once resembling simple earth, had turned a vibrant yellow and now extended to cover its head. The small sprout on its head had disappeared, replaced by two lush bushes growing on both sides of its back. Its feet, now adorned with sharp claws, seemed to enhance its physical combat capabilities significantly.
However, compared to the earnest and steady Turtwig, Grotle's overall appearance gave off a somewhat clumsy and lumbering impression.
