Arakh's foot stepped on the outskirts of Elabra. His face was brimming with anticipation and excitement, not for the hunt, but for the experiment that was to come.
"Ravenspire Woods," Arakh muttered as he walked on the trail of the grassless ground, just beyond here. "I think I have what it takes, ain't that right, Darath Anubis?" he finally breathed the scent of the woods and heard chatters of crickets. Canopies covered his figure and shadows of the tree enveloped him.
Arakh's ears twitched, "Huh?" he paused. The sound of clanking was drumming, it was metal against something. He turned around in the direction of the source. His enhanced golden eyes saw farther than the normal ones, through the bushes, the smallest hole, he found a spark.
He furrowed his brows gradually walking toward the source as the sound rang heavier, occasionally the sound of a youth was heard, yelling with each strike. Then the howl of the beast. The branches shook as the soundwave traveled.
The piercing sound made him instinctively raise his hands and cover his ears. With gritted teeth, he thought. Well, that must be it!
He slowly approached the area of the battle, sneaking behind the bushes to get a better view. With each clank, he was closer, with each yell he was closer. His eyes widened seeing the beast he was supposed to slay.
The beast was in the shape of a monkey roughly the size of an adult. It was jumping up and down with massive thuds in each landing. The arms were long enough that it would make it hard for a sword to reach its main body, however...
Wait a minute, there are only a pair of eyes. Is it the wrong beast?
He darted his glance toward the youth wearing the same uniform as him but with two stripes, A Novice Resonator. The youth's face was easily forgettable, with no discernible features. He rasped for breath as if he were emerging from underwater. His hands held the standard sword Arakh saw from the store but its point looked dull.
"This is bad," Arakh muttered. "That guy is losing."
"Tch!" the youth gritted his teeth. "Resonance Skill..." he muttered as earth adorned around the standard sword. "Earth Sword."
Arakh's eyes sharpened, It's imperfect he saw the structure of the earth was brittle, and some were chipped off by gravity as he was holding it.
The beast pummeled its chest. "U U U!" before picking up a rock and throwing it at the youth.
Clank!
The youth managed to parry it before lunging forward. He drove his sword upward before slashing it down but the beast was nimble enough to step back and slap his face. Sending him hurtling.
Seeing the youth fall the beast drummed its chest in victory. It chased the fallen youth before grabbing it by the leg. Slamming the youth left, and right, before thwarting the youth away.
The sword spun in midair before falling and sliding. Arakh looked down and his eyes widened, the sword was sliding right in front of the bushes he was hiding. The weapon was within reach, but so was the youth to the Three-Eyed Howler.
The youth rolled over and hurriedly pushed himself back up to a tree. "G-Go away!" he said with blood trailing from his lips.
Arakh saw how the youth was trembling, eyes crying, fingers shivering. He looked at his own hand and felt nothing, not even a goosebumps. Darath Anubis, you never mentioned that the first level of body enhancement will have this kind of effect too.
"Hmm?" Arakh noticed a pebble beside him.
The beast stood tall in front of the youth. It drummed its chest in victory as it took a deep breath. The youth shrieked, he was caged with those long arms keeping him at bay. He gritted his teeth and covered his ears with his hands.
A subtle sound of breaking wind was heard and the pebble bounced off the head of the beast.
The shivering youth slowly opened its eyes and saw the beast turning around. It's jumping up and down in rage toward a direction where a kid stood up.
That uniform, the youth realized that Arakh was from the same academy.
Arakh picked up the dull sword with one hand. The weight mattered little as he played with it a little, giving little to no heed toward the raging beast cawing.
"Hey, you," Arakh called out.
"W-What?" the youth responded. Wait a minute, I'm the senior here!
"Is this the Three-Eyed Howler?" asked Arakh as he casually dodged the rock the beast was throwing at him.
"Y-Yes!" the youth responded in a shriek, glancing panickedly back and forth between the beast and Arakh.
"Where is the third eye?" Arakh tilted his head and dodged another pebble.
"It's in the glabella! Once it's got mad, it will appear—"
"There it is," Arakh saw the glabella of the beast form a discerning slit before opening its eyes. "Now you looked the part."
The beast no longer jumped. Its back was no longer hunched. Its spine was erected much like an adult man's but with long arms. Its fangs were bare, and its breathing was heavy. However, despite the increasing nightmare, Arakh was still as calm as lake water, sword in hand.
The youth scurried away, making a run with his life depending on it. Thanks, kid! I will fund your grave later! the youth thought with his lungs refusing to give up.
"Tch! Sacrificing me, is that it?" Arakh furrowed his brows as he spared half a second glancing the youth.
The beast laid his arms down before roaring at Arakh. The full burst made his hair flutter but his eyes didn't falter.
The Three-Eyed Howler roared again, its spine snapping into an unnatural curve as it lunged toward Arakh. The ground trembled beneath its weight, but Arakh's feet stayed rooted. His lips curved slightly as he gripped the dull sword. "Alright then," he muttered. "Let's see what you've got."
