Chapter 7

When I got back, I discovered Daniel had beaten me to it.

He was sitting miserably in the study, drenched from the rain, examining the divorce papers.

I threw a towel at him.

"Get dry. If the agreement looks good, we can start the process."

"Are you leaving this evening?"

I'd been getting ready to go in a few days, but his sudden appearance caught me off guard.

"Yes."

I fetched my mostly-packed suitcase from the bedroom.

"Louisa, I know I screwed up."

Another half-hearted excuse followed.

I went back to the study, seeing him soaking wet, his image oddly merging with the memory of him rescuing me in that alleyway.

I'd always been attracted to someone who'd go above and beyond for me.

But the man in front of me now wasn't the same person.

"Tell me, what exactly did you screw up?"

I slumped against the wall, feeling drained.

I didn't want to let him off the hook, but I was curious to see how genuine he still was.

Daniel's eyes brightened at my question.
