When the medical center reached out, I reluctantly agreed to visit him. As soon as he caught sight of me, his thin face brightened with anticipation. "Lanaya, I knew you'd come to my aid. I shouldn't have resorted to such a desperate measure, but I longed for you so much. Please, come back home with me."

His hollow eyes welled up, reminiscent of a pleading puppy. Expressionless, I replied, "If you continue pursuing me like this, Zolenn will come after me again. Please, release us both."

Despite my aloofness, Yzail persisted.

"I've taken care of everything—I no longer have feelings for her."

But I only felt revulsion. "Your words are empty. The child is the result of your infidelity, and I can't risk being hurt again."

Finally, I completed the discharge paperwork and departed, feeling unburdened. I wouldn't have to see his haggard face anymore.
