Scene 1: The Hidden Room
Setting: The Whispering Chamber beneath the ruins
Mira positioned herself against the cold, wet wall of the hidden chamber. The air was thick, as if the room itself was alive and breathing. Ethan’s torchlight flashed on the carvings that lined the walls, revealing more cryptic symbols and ancient figures.
“Look here,” Mira said, pointing to a design of a figure holding a bright object, surrounded by people who are kneeling down. “That must be the Cipher.”
Ethan walked lowly beside her, his knife still tightly held in his hand. “What is happening with the whispers, though? It’s like the walls are alive.”
The low, unintelligible whispers had become louder since they entered the chamber. Mira shook her head, as she tries to block them out. “I don’t know. Maybe it is the wind… or something else.”
As Mira looked at the carvings, she found a column of symbols that seemed to form a pattern. Her mind moved quickly, recalling the fragments of the cipher they had put the pieces together earlier.
“These symbols, they are coordinates,” she said, as excitement rosed in her voice. “But they’re encoded differently. If I can break the code of this, it might lead us to the Cipher.”
Ethan frowned. “And what if it leads us to more trouble?”
Mira did not answer. Her attention was so much on the symbols, tracing them with her fingers. But then, a low thunder sounded through the chamber.
“We need to go,” Ethan said, pulling her to her feet.
Not too willing, Mira took hold of her notebook and followed him out of the chamber, her mind racing with hope of possibilities.
Scene 2: A Desperate Plea
Setting: Back at the campsite
They returned to find Armand awake, sitting by the fire with a look in his eyes of someone who is worried. He looked up as they came closer, his face was pale and drawn.
“You went back to the ruins,” he said plainly.
“We found something,” Mira said. “A secret chamber with carvings that might lead to the Cipher.”
Armand widened his eyes in fear. “You don’t understand. The Cipher is not meant to be found. You will be stopped by The Forgotten.”
“Who are the Forgotten?” Ethan asked, while sitting opposite from him.
Armand paused before he started talking, his voice was trembling. “They were once like us, seekers of knowledge, treasure hunters, scholars. But the Cipher… it corrupted them, as It consumed their minds and their souls. Now they live only to protect it, bound to its will.”
Mira’s stomach turned with pains. “Are you saying the Cipher is alive?”
“Not alive,” Armand whispered. “But it has an effect, a power. It will do whatever it takes to remain secret.”
Ethan looked worried as he turned to face Mira who looked the same. “And yet, here we are.”
Armand grabbed Mira’s hand. “You still have a choice. You can leave now. Destroy the map and forget about the Cipher.”
Mira pulled away her hand, her jaw was set in a ready posture. “I can’t. I need to know the truth, about my father, about everything.”
Armand became weak and put down his shoulders. “Then may God help you.”
Scene 3: The Codebreaker’s Challenge
Setting: Inside the inn, late at night
Mira sat at a small wooden table in the inn, with the cipher pieces and her notebook spread out before her. The dim light from a lantern casted long shadows through the room.
Ethan was leaning against the wall, watching her as she worked. “You have been looking at those symbols for many hours. Maybe you should take a break.”
“I’m close to success,” Mira muttered, jotting notes in her notebook. “The symbols follow a Fibonacci order, but there’s a secondary layer—a substitution cipher.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Can you say it In English, please?”
Mira smiled smugly despite herself. “It means whoever created this did not want it to be solved easily. But they underestimated me.”
She tapped her pencil against her notebook, her mind was pounding. Suddenly, the pieces clicked into place.
“I’ve got it!” she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. “The coordinates lead to a location deeper in the mountains. It is an ancient monastery, left unoccupied many centuries ago.”
Ethan stretches himself. “And you think the Cipher is there?”
“It’s our best lead.”
Before Ethan could respond, the low sound of footsteps sounded in the hallway outside their room.
“Did you hear that?” Mira whispered.
Ethan held tight his knife, moving silently to the door. He opened it with a little push, curiously looking into the dimly lit hallway.
No one was there.
“Probably it is just the wind,” Ethan said, though his grip on the knife remained firm.
Mira was not so sure.
Scene 4: The Monastery’s Guardian
Setting: The path to the abandoned monastery
The next morning, they started their journey into the mountains. The air grew colder, and the thick forest around, covered them.
As they climbed, Mira could not doubt the feeling that they were being watched. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end, but whenever she turned, she saw nothing but trees.
“Are you sure we’re moving in the right direction?” Ethan asked, as his breath proved visible in the frigid air.
“Yes,” Mira said, consulting her map. “The monastery should be just ahead.”
They entered into a open area, and there it was—a towering structure of stone, its walls were already falling as a result of age. Vines wangled across its surface, and its windows were wide opened like empty eyes.
“Creepy,” Ethan muttered.
As they go closer, a being came out of the shadows, a tall man with a weathered face and piercing blue eyes. He held a staff and wore a cloak that had the same color with the forest.
“You should not be here,” he said, his voice was deep and forceful.
“Mira said, we’re looking for something,” as she stepped forward.
“The Cipher,” the man said, as his expression darkened. “You do not understand the danger it brings along.”
Before Mira could respond, the man raised his staff, and the ground under them shoked.
Scene 5: The Trial of the Cipher
Setting: Inside the monastery
The man led them inside the monastery, his outward attitude was calm but unyielding. The air was cold and heavy, and the whispers from the chamber came again, louder than ever before.
“If you wish to find the Cipher,” the man said, “you must prove yourself worthy.”
He led them to a large door made of stone covered with complicated carvings. “Beyond this door lies the path to the Cipher. But note that, the path tests not only your skill but your resolve.”
“What kind of tests?” Ethan asked carefully.
The man smiled faintly. “The kind that reveal who you truly are.”
The door open as it made a high- pitched noise giving way to a dark corridor that stretched into the unknown.
Scene 6: Shadows of the Past
Setting: The corridor and its illusions
As they walked through the corridor, Mira and Ethan were separated suddenly, by a blinding light.
Mira found herself alone in a room that looked mysteriously familiar. It was like her childhood home. The picture of her father’s study exactly, and full of his belongings, made her to pour tears from her eyes.
“Dad?” she whispered, with her voice trembling.
A figure in the shadows showed up, resembling her father. “Mira,” it said, its voice distorted. “You don’t need the Cipher. Let it go.”
Mira shook her head. “You’re not my real father.”
The figure stepped closer. “You will lose your life, just as I did.”
Meanwhile, on the other side Ethan faced his own trial, a vision of his brother Sam, accusing him of forsaking their family.
Both of them came out from their illusions shaken but they were determined to continue.
Scene 7: The Cipher’s Door
Setting: The end of the corridor
Mira and Ethan met again at the end of the corridor, where a large door appeared. Symbols shined faintly on its surface, forming a complex puzzle.
“This is it,” Mira said, her hands were trembling.
As she worked to solve the mystery, the whispers grew so high as if blocking the ears. Shadows moved in a twisted form around them, and the ground shook.
Finally, with a click, the door opened.
Inside, a base stood at the center of the room, holding a small, difficultly carved object, the Cipher.
Mira moved forward, her breath trying to catch her breathe. “We found it,” she whispered.
But as her fingers ran over the artifact, the shadows pushed forward, and the room erupted in crisis.
