CHAPTER 41: CONVERGENCE OF FATES

Scene 1: Elara's Descent

The narrow archway led Elara into a spiraling staircase that went deep into the heart of whatever ancient structure housed her. Her knife's amber glow illuminated worn stone steps, each one carved with symbols that changed subtly as she passed, as if responding to her presence. The wailing sound grew louder with every step, though she could not determine if it was drawing closer or simply growing in intensity.

"Steady," she whispered to herself, a habit formed during years of solitary scouting missions. "One step at a time."

The air grew heavier as she went further, charged with a peculiar energy that made the fine hairs on her arms stand on end. It reminded her of the atmosphere before a lightning storm, but with an underlying wrongness that set her teeth on edge. Whatever dwelled at the bottom of this staircase, it bent reality around itself like a heavy object distorting fabric.
