"He's a retired Special Task Force member? No wonder his marksmanship and reflexes are so remarkable," Major Kyle muttered, a hint of surprise in his voice.
In the backseat, Dylan remained unconscious, his breathing steady.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The sharp crack of gunfire echoed through the streets as they sped toward Maple Street.
Soon, they arrived at their destination.
"Major, there are zombies everywhere. I don't think retrieving the medical supplies will be easy," Leo said, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly.
Major Kyle's expression hardened. "Easy or not, we have no choice. We have to give it everything we've got," he replied in a firm and determined tone.
They soon reached the Hope Clinic.
Zombies who were aimlessly wandering the streets immediately turn toward them. The sound of the cars caught their attention and with their decayed, filthy mouths releasing guttural groans, they surged toward them.
Major Kyle grabbed his gun and said, "Everyone, clear the zombies here first! Once the area is secure, we'll head inside and retrieve the medical supplies."
"Yes, Major!" the team responded, and quickly started eliminating the zombies near the clinic.
"Sylas, stay by the car and protect Dylan, just in case," Major Kyle ordered. Though Dylan was safely locked inside the vehicle, and the zombies wouldn't be able to break in, Major Kyle wasn't willing to take any chances. After witnessing Dylan's superhuman strength, Major Kyle was determined to protect Dylan and find out more about it once they go back to the safe zone.
"Understood, Major," Sylas replied, as he stood beside the car and guarded it vigilantly.
Major Kyle lifted his gun with practiced ease, and started firing at the oncoming horde of zombies.
"Major, there are zombies inside the clinic," Leo called out, his back pressed against Kyle's as they worked work together to shoot down the zombies.
Major Kyle quickly shot a glance at the clinic and spotted several zombies moving behind the cracked glass windows.
"Let's handle the ones out here first," he said with a deep frown and continued to pull the trigger.
After clearing the zombies around the
clinic, Major Kyle quickly instructed four
soldiers to remain outside with Sylas,
guarding the perimeter, while he led the rest of the team inside.
Bang!
Leo kicked the clinic door open, and the
zombies inside immediately lunged toward
them. There were four of them.
Leo dodged the first one, delivering a
powerful kick that sent it sprawling before
finishing it off with a precise shot.
Meanwhile, Major Kyle and the others
quickly shot down the remaining three zombies.
"'Stay alert, everyone. There might still be
more inside," Major Kyle warned them.
After thoroughly scanning the room to ensure it was clear of zombies, they moved to the other rooms. Major Kyle quickly assigned tasks, instructing Leo to take ten team members to gather the medical supplies while the rest guarded the operation as the supplies were transported from the clinic to the trucks.
Outside, the four guards stationed by the perimeter occasionally dealt with stray zombies that wandered too close, taking them down with precise shots. Sylas remained vigilant by the car door, his eyes constantly scanning the surroundings.
SHUA... SHUA... SHUA...
Sylas suddenly heard faint, unsettling sounds coming from his right. He immediately turned his head toward the source. There stood a private high school, its gate tightly shut. But through the narrow gaps between the steel bars, Sylas could see a horde of zombies emerging from the school building.
He wasn't the only one who noticed. The other team members spotted the movement too, their pupils constricting in alarm as the horde rushed toward the gate.
"Major, there's a horde of zombies nearby!" one of the soldiers urgently reported to Major Kyle.
If those zombies broke out, they would be
overwhelmed. There was no way they could handle such a massive horde.
"They're... all high school students," one of
the soldiers muttered, his voice trembling
with emotion as he swallowed hard.
Sylas didn't know how to describe what he
was feeling. The sight before him was both
tragic and horrifying. The zombies
clad in bloodstained, filthy high school
uniforms. Their emaciated bodies moved
with unnatural jerks, their faces twisted and decayed. Some were missing limbs, others had hollow sockets where their eyes should have been. It was a grotesque and
heartbreaking scene.
It became clear what had happened. The
students had likely been inside the school
when the apocalypse first broke out, and
the infection had spread quickly inside the school. Someone had locked the steel gate from the outside, trying to contain the chaos within. But now, the loud sounds of gunfire from the Supply Hunters team had drawn their attention. The noise had roused them, and they were rushing toward the gate, wanting to come out. They were looking at them like foods.
The scene sent chills down the spines of the team.
"Evacuate! Everyone, leave now!" Major Kyle commanded, his voice firm and urgent as he made the split-second decision to abandon the site.
Even though they had managed to collect only half of the medical supplies, Major Kyle didn't hesitate. With such a massive horde of zombies, the steel gate wouldn't hold for long. It was only a matter of time before it gave way.
The team quickly got into the vehicles.
"Where's Leo?" Major Kyle suddenly asked when he didn't see Leo entering the car.
"He was in the clinic basement where the medical supplies are stored!" one of the soldiers, who had been in charge of transporting the supplies, quickly reported.
Without a moment's hesitation, Major Kyle bolted out from the car and headed back into the clinic, several team members quickly followed behind him.
Sylas turned sharply to his right and saw the horde of zombies inside the high school, all pressing against the steel gate. The gate groaned and shook under the force. Sylas tightened his grip on his gun and narrowed his eyes.
Inside the clinic, Major Kyle hurried toward the basement. When he reached it, he found Leo unconscious on the floor, surrounded by scattered medical supplies.
"Leo!" Major Kyle called out, rushing to his side. He knelt down, checking for a pulse. Relieved to find him still breathing, he scooped Leo up into his arms.
"Major, let me carry him," one of the soldiers said.
"It's fine. We need to move quickly," Major Kyle replied as he rushed out of the baseman with Leo slung over his shoulder.
