Chapter 5

Ray's eyes grew wide, his hand nearly dropping the phone. "Am I hearing things?" he asked, breathless. "Where exactly are you?"

"I'm at the medical center, in the maternity ward," Christine answered, her voice brimming with excitement.

"I'll be there in no time," he responded, barely containing his enthusiasm.

As he ended the call, he turned to face me, his expression quickly shifting to one of indifference. "That was work," he fibbed smoothly. "An urgent issue needs my attention. Stay here and consider how to become a better future Mrs. Palmer. You should learn to be more patient and less reactive. A more open mind would benefit you."

His boldness was almost comical. I had just overheard his conversation with Christine, yet he acted as if I were too gullible to connect the dots.
