Aurora was always suspicious of Peter. There was something off about that man.
Even when she first met him, as some random beggar off the street that somehow spent most of his money on books, she knew there was something peculiar.
That suspicion even grew when he started to help her in some cases, even if he was being paid off and even if the homeless were quite informative, thanks to how they go unnoticed.
His insights extended far beyond just witnessing something, his reasoning, deductive and analytical skills were quite good as well.
At first she just thought he was someone who wanted to learn to better himself and his living situation.
A homeless man pulling himself up by his bootstraps to finally live the good life. However, he's been here for years and never seemed to budge.
She even offered him some help beforehand b,ut he always just declined it, for one reason or another.
That and whenever she followed him, he always seemed to simply disappear into the night, never to be seen again until he was back in the library
This was super suspicious, even more so when she questioned this about it and all she was met with was him talking about how he just wants to be left alone.
When she persisted and even offered him more, he just laughed and left.
Even amongst all of the strange mysteries and gangs in this city, he remained one of the most elusive.
So elusive, in fact, that when she walked back to her small building in the middle of an alleyway with a couple of neon lights that depicted a rainbow, much like her Name, she would usually pull up a corkboard filled with multiple photographs, newspapers, eyewitness testimonies, and many other things.
Each one talking about a burglary, a scam and so on. Aurora suspected that there would be countless more, but most people don't report when they were scammed, and sometimes thefts go under people's noses.
Many of them were seemingly uncconected, the eyewitnesses all said that they were made by different people. Sometimes, it is an old man, sometimes a young boy, and even a few times, it is by a woman.
However, the only thing uncommon would be the way they all disappeared. All of them vanished without a trace, and even Aurora saw this firsthand when she witnessed several men chase about to assault an old man before he ran away, disappearing without anything to track him down.
This began to spark a wild idea in her head. What if there was a group of extraordinary thieves that went around the city, stealing valuables from others?
She perused all of these events, and each robbery never seemed to be taking place at the same time, but again, Aurora could not be sure. But they did pop up a few years back, nearly half a decade ago.
One of the first ever ideas she had was that it could possibly be someone masquerading as numerous people all at once, but that was extremely outlandish.
Who could possibly be able to act and dress up as those many different types of characters? It was just unheard of ,really.
However, it was a good idea to keep that idea at the back of her mind. Who knows, perhaps it just might be true, but for now, it's best not to rely on that.
On the other hand, the group of extraordinary thieves' idea was a good one. There was definitely some presidency in it, and it was very feasible.
She knew on some level that Peter was connected to them in some way. Perhaps as a logician or a broker. Someone who gathered information.
He could have even been their leader, which would have been ingenious, hiding in plain sight as some beggar down by the street.
No one would have expected him, no one at all. Even she wouldn't have thought so, but the cracks are going to show soon.
Earlier she was about to question that strange woman, who said she was from another world. Now while that was absurd, what was even strange to Aurora was that man that all of a sudden came to her rescue and shood her away.
He instantly called her out for what she was doing and said that she was lying, almost in the same way that Peter would.
She was sure he was connected in some way or another, but sadly this was only a side project, the real main story was with these new thugs in town extorting the others.
The Imperium Sanguines, they almost seemed so, artificial in a way. It was as if they were mannequins that could move around, manipulated by some other benefactor.
None of them even fell for her charms, and while that could be just because of taste, she also noticed that they always wore masks and dark colors.
They seemed to have some kind of hidden base that was possibly connected to the underground. She saw them enter into the sewers, only not following them since she was investigating what would be going on above ground.
Luckily, Franklin and his goons entered. While they were brutish, they were also easily manipulated, especially with good looks and valuable coins.
Apparently they, could have been hoodwinked. One of their last memories was them facing the Baroness, a petite woman who was one of the leaders of the Imperium Sanguines.
But then they suddenly found themselves back in the tunnels that led to their base.
However, they also met some kind of strange scavenger, one who seemed to just end up there. He begged for mercy, and they left him alone.
Aurora was thankful, though, since Franklin and Peter both confirmed that the Clocktower, which lies at the very center of the city, was where another one of her bases were.
And so today, she stepped out. A smile on her face as she ventured beyond to see where this mystery took her.
