Replace? How could it replace what he had clearly just drawn? Was this what it meant by altering the functions?

One inscription per layer—that was the basis of inscriptions, or at least this was what it was for people at his level. But imagine being able to switch the inscriptions on your weapon mid-fight?

His sword could go forward really fast on its own, then boom, he could change the inscription and make it go right. What if it could be used against enemy weapons also?
